If you havent heard Gov't Mule you havent heard great music. The 1994 debut self titled album was pretty much recorded in 3 days - the first 4 tracks recorded without stopping - 1 take - finish - print.
In 2000 their longtime bass player Allen Woody died and their two sucessive releases Deep End vol 1 and 2 feature a slew of the greatest bass players of all time paying homage to a fallen brother (Woody). Featuring Guests such as:
Stefan Lessard Bass (Dave Matthews Band)
Mike Gordon Background Vocals, Bass, Vocals (Phish)
Les Claypool Bass, Vocals (Primus)
Jack Bruce Bass, Vocals (Cream)
Billy Cox Bass (Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies)
Phil Lesh Bass (Grateful Dead / Phil Lesh and Friends)
John Entwistle Bass (The Who)
Larry Graham Bass, Vocals (Sly (and the Family) Stone)
Chris Squire Bass (Yes)
Rocco Prestia Bass (Tower of Power)
George Porter, Jr. Bass (The Meters)
Tony Levin Bass (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson Discography (http://www.papabear.com/tldiscog.htm) )
Jack Casady Bass (Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna)
Bootsy Collins Bass (P-Funk Allstars / Parliament Funkadelics)
Roger Glover Bass (Deep Purple)
Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers)
Dave Schools Bass (Widespread Panic fame)
Mike Watt Bass (Minutemen)
Willie Weeks Bass (Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman)
Chris Wood Bass (Medeski Martin and Wood)
Allen Woody Bass (Gov't Mule)
*phew* - While Deep End vol 1. and 2 is the quintessential bass players album, I personally recommend the old Gov't Mule recordings.
Gov't Mule was:
Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, and Matt Abts (Haynes and Woody from the Allman Brothers, Abts from the ####ey Betts Band)
Gov't Mule now is:
Warren Haynes
Matt Abts
Dave Schools
