Just received a 20GB IPOD. I've followed all installation literature to a tee. I have both Itunes and MusicMatch. I have an Adaptec Duo Connect combo firewire USB2.0(AUA-1411 with power adapter plugged into the wall). I connect my Ipod into the cradle(or straight into the firewire card) and all I get is " Do not disconnect", forever.

I'm ready to hear my mistakes and take my punishment.

Do not disconnect is GOOD. That means your ipod is recognized. Now, open up Itunes, and you should see an ipod icon in the tree, and another one in the lower right hand corner of Itunes. Click on the one in the lower right hand of Itunes to set options--ie autosynch.

Then click on the ipod in the tree to synch, or eject your ipod--your ipod, after you choose eject, will then say "OK to disconnect"--you'll be all set.

I'd laugh at you and attempt then to humiliate you, but I had the EXACT same question here 1 year ago--and just like you, it was my first post.

So instead of all that, I'll welcome you to the 'lounge instead!

OK I tried all that for the umpteenth time.

I opened up Itunes. There is no Ipod in the tree or in the lower right hand corner. In MusicMatch, it isn't seen either.

I'll take all the humiliation there is, as long as we can get this ting to work.
Also, as soon as I plugged the Ipod in it started with the clicking and clicking....... Do not disconnect

Any and all suggestions welcome.

OK, let's back up a second. What generation Ipod do you have (I assumed a gen3, but it just occurred to me it may be a different generation), and what firmware is running on it?

It's 1 month old from the Apple web-site. The firmware is the latest off the Apple web-site also. I just came from the Apple store and the technician plugged it into a mac and it was instantly recognized. He then reformatted it to a Mac Ipod to see if it would continue to be recognized and take music. It does. I can play what he installed. Now I'm going to reformat it back to a windows Ipod and see what happens.

Nothing changed. Do not disconnect, click,click,click....................
I can't get MusicMatch or Itunes to see it.

Funny, I had the same problem when trying to use my wife's new iPod.

I read some websites and every one kept saying to do it from iTunes. We haven't installed iTunes (yet), and I couldn't find anything about it in MusicMatch.

But we do have an iPodManager icon in our system tray. And right clicking on it allows us to eject the iPod.

The strange part is that I have not seen anyone mention this iPodManager in any forums. (not that I have read a huge amount)

Is it something new? Anyway, you may want to look for that.

If you have iPod manager installed...get rid of it. It's the bane of many a 'podders existence.

You can find it in Add/remove programs as either iPod Manager or iPod Software for Windows.

It's not needed and can cause connection problems. In fact, when you install iTunes (http://www.itunes.com) it will uninstall it for you.

Also make sure the MMJB iPod Plugin is uninstalled.

sctrim: you're problem sounds like the iPod didn't restore correctly. On the iPod, under Settings>About does it say "Format:Windows" (at the bottom)? If not, it's still a MiPod and the Restore hasn't worked properly.

I'll take it back out of the box later and check. I've packed it up and was ready to send it back for good. I'll also check to see if it's possibly my brand new adaptec AUA-1411 fire wire card. Any other suggestions if what you said isn't the problem ?

OK, I figured it out. Quite simple actually. 2 things. First, when you get an Ipod the very first thing you should do is go to Itunes and or MusicMatch and load the latest version. Yes you can run one or both. Then slide in your FireWire cardadapter, forget the whole USB 2.0 thing(not needed). Your computer will instantly recognize the card, so DO NOT install their software! Then plug in your Ipod and GO. Again, the computer will instantly recognize it.
When you visit either music site you will logically figure out how to tranfer your media. WOW. Yes it is that easy.
NEXT-
This is the best part so far. Go to any electronics store and buy a cd player to car casette adapter. Plug the headphone part into Ipod, the casette into the the casette player and instantly you'll have thousands of songs to listen to. No more switching cd's in the trunk.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS

Oh, 2nd- stay away from the ADAPTEC DUO-CONNECT AUA-1411

But how did you get rid of the Do Not Disconnect from your Ipod - I tried to install tonight and Musicmatch doesn't see it so I can't eject but it just shows the warning!!

Go back to MusicMatch. On the bottom left side, click on send to portable. When this opens, click on the large "Portable Device"
Then click yes on the next screen. This in turn opens a MusicMatch library of pictures of portable media devices. Click on the matching picture and let it download the proper software for your computer AND Ipod. To keep it simple try to follow my 12-21-2003 10:52 post.
