I bought a 40GB iPOD recently. Connecting via firewire to my XP pc, the iPOD froze. All rebooting efforts didn't work. Two middle key, outer keys, etc.) Went though support hell until they acknowledged that it's their problem and returned iPOD to Apple. Got the iPOD back with no explaination of what the problem was. Trying again to connect to PC. PC detects drive and I can read through the sub-folders but having downloaded iTunes, all songs content was deleted by the synchronisation process leaving just titles. iTunes keeps tellling me that the disk may be damaged. Went to an apple store and all is ok with the iPOd when connected to a Mac. I now have the iPOd 6 weeks and have yet to hear a song. Dumb luck or does the iPOD have a problem with XP. Should I use musicmatch or itunes. Is there a known conflict with iTunes and any XP applications. As the PC is also new, I've got hardly any software on it and I do my iPOD checks with all other applications closed.
Help !
That sounds like an ipod problem or firewire card problem--what firewire card are you using, or are you using USB?

Well I use Windows XP, 3G iPod, and a Belkin 6-Port Firewire card and have had zero problems since day one *shrugs*
Like dmt1 said above, it'd help if you could tell us what Firewire card you have..

I'm coming to the conclusion that it's a firewire problem too.
The firewire is a VIA OHCI-conforming 1394 bus controller.
Details regarding the driver just say Microsoft driver version 51.1.2535.0 and the details show it in the standard driver directory.
Should I reinstall the driver from the VIA web site ?
That's not a bad idea. If it doesn't work (and unfortunately it probably won't), you're probably going to have to consider another firewire card--the adaptec 4300 is the consensus in these parts..

The pc I have has the card built in and I don't think it's possible to install a different firewire.
Should I give up on the firewire route and try USB ?
Are you sure you can't install another one--I'll bet there's a slot for one...
The USB route is fine, provided you have USB 2.0--USB 1.1 is too slow, at least for me. You'll have to buy the cable from Apple obviously to make it work. If you have USB 1.1, if you have a slot open for a firewire card, I think you're better off purchasing that than the cable--if you have USB 2.0, purchasing the cable would be a reasonable way to go.
