I have had my shuffle for a year now, and while I like it am tired of its limitations. I have decided to buy a refurbished nano in the hopes that the lack of moving parts will let my new ipod last a good long time.
I was happy to see 2nd gen nanos in the refurbished sales list, and read about the differences. The 1st gen nanos' scratching problems are well known; with concern, I read about the 2nd gen nanos' problems with dust collecting under the case in front of the LCD screen where it cannot be cleaned.
I would like your opinions - which nano is easier to care for and harder to damage? I can buy a case to protect a 1st gen, but am not sure that I can keep fine dust away from a 2nd gen unit. What are your thoughts?
thanks,
Andrew

I have both 1st and 2nd gen Nanos, and the 2nd gen looks and feels sturdier to me. They`re all scratch prone, but I can throw it inside my bag and not worry too much. The 1st gen looks so small and delicate in my hands (I´m a woman with long fingers) and I always feel it´s going to slip through my fingers. The feel of the second gen, although barely the same size, looks more delicate. I bought the 1st gen used, and had it for 8 months, while the second gen only for a month.

I keep my 2ndGen Nano in an Agent 18 clear case. The case adds no extra bulk to the looks of the Nano and the screen is protected. I agree, the 2nd Gen Nano is more slippery out of a case compared to the 1st Gen Nano. I've dropped mine a few times when I didn't have the Agent 18 case on it.

I dont think the nano would get too hurt from a small drop, specially on a wooden floor or a carpet. The most damaged by a drop would be the big ones, video and photo, because of the hard drives. That`s what I like of the nano. What the nano will not withstand is twist, e.g. putting it in your jeans front pocket and sitting down, specially if you wear tight jeans. I´ve seen a couple broken LCD from this. If you like carring it in your jeans pocket get a cristal case.
