New hard drive, recognizing ipod?

I had a hard drive crash this week. I installed a new hard drive, I tried to use the ipod installation disc, but it wont recognize my iPod.

How do you get an iPod to work on what is essentially a new computer?

The iPod must get recognized as soon as you plug it into the USB slot. What OS are you using now? Were you using the same OS before the crash?
Does your USB slot function properly? If it does, then check if other USB devices work on your computer.
