Hi all,

Getting my 20gb g3 for xmas, just wondering, I've got 2 firewire ports on my pc, will it matter if I set it up using one of them and later change to the other port? Will it "just work" if I do that?

Thanks in advance,
Gavin.

it shouldn't matter which port you use

OK thanks, I'll start with the onboard motherboard firewire port (which is at the front of the pc) just to make sure it's working, then move to the Audigy card at the back for convenience and hopefully it will still work.

I've heard that the Audigy card gives problems..not sure..Do a search on the forums.

Yep, Audigy is one of the worst, if not the worst firewire card for an ipod...Sorry...It may work for you, it may work for a while then quit, or not at all.

They all will work even the one on your sound card it did at my friends house.

Yeh, that's why I'm gonna use the onboard one first just to make sure it's all ok, then move to the audigy and see if I have problems, if I do, will just have to go back to the onboard one, which is a little more inconvenient cos it's at the front of the pc.

With all due respect, no, they don't. They might work for some, but they all don't work. They might work for a while, then quit. It's hit or miss with many firewire cards, and firewire cards installed in the mother board, and Audigy firewire cards, have consistently been the most unreliable. It's worth trying it, as you already have it, but if it doesn't work, I wouldn't spend a lot of time on it--I'd get another card.

You can imagine the pain that's going to be on my face if xmas day, *neither* of them work :O

I sincerely hope it will work for you--you've got two choices, so hopefully one of them will. Nothing would be worse than having that hot little thing in your hands (your ipod, that is :D ) and not being able to transfer your tunes to it...

Good luck--hope it works for your!

hehe thanks.

Maybe I should have got the usb cable as an insurance policy! Does the usb cable charge the ipod though?

No, it doesn't, BUT, it has a firewire adapter too, so you can charge during synching--you just have to have your AC adapter handy. It's one funky cable, but it allows you to hook up to USB and your AC adapter at the same time. But you'll want to make sure you have USB 2.0 though, and not USB 1.1--otherwise the synch will take until NEXT christmas...

Also if you're thinking about buying a new Firewire card, Adaptec 4300 is the way to go. They always work...they're very nice cards...Alot of the members here have them :] I know I do :D

I've had no problems with the Firewire port on my Audigy 2. I've been using it for over a year with my Digital8 camcorder, and it's worked flawlessly with my brand-new iPod. It's possible that some people have had problems, but I know that I haven't. I had a stand-alone Firewire card before I got the Audigy board, and they both woked equally well for me.
