View Full Version : What reasoning is there for having the left bud wire shorter than the right!?

I open my raved reviewed MX500's and to my surprise... the right ear's wire is 12" longer than the left!
Why do the best headphones choose this design? What was wrong with the Y cable? Or is it me doing something wrong? Everytime I wear them my left ear is constantly being tugged on and popping out, it drives me insane. With the Apple 'buds I can rock out upside down and the won't go anywhere.
Am I the only one that has a problem with this design? I never seen anyone complain about this on the boards before.
Maybe I should just crawl under my silent rock and live a life without good sounding music :o

You're supposed to run the cable behind your neck.
I didn't like the new style at first, but got used to it and like 'em much better than the Y cable.
pretty soon all buds will be J cables, it seems.

Really?
There was a big thread about this somewhere in here, I think the conclusion was the J design was a fad. Hey, maybe coming back eh.

the behind the neck thing is really cool and smart so when you put out your headphones to answer your mobile or something they will just hang on your shoulders instead of falling down ...but using the headphones this way makes the cable shorter than its supposed to be and whenever i turn my head the headphone fall down....

there are disadvantages and advantages to both, the J design the cord isn't in the way as much as the Y design, but if not positioned correctly they restrict your movement of your head from left to right.
At the same time with Y design they get in the way and seem to fall out easier.

J-style only has one function; behind the neck, and even so it's still faulty.
no matter what type of earphone you use that uses J-style cord, be it earbud or canalphone, there is a significant weight shift to the left earpiece. you'll find yourself re-adjusting that left piece so often, you wouldn't be enjoying the music; speaking from experience.
Y-style works because cord weight distribution is equal to both earpieces. again speaking from experience; I haven't had many problems w/ earphones falling out or dislodging using a y-cord than i had w/ j-cord (Sony earphones are main offenders of these)

J-cord is horrible!

Can we take this one step further and list some buds that have "Y" cables and are of good quality. I bought the Sennheiser 300's and opened the package and saw they were 2 different lengths and didn't think much of it, that was last Thursday. They went back today, they just will not work for me period!

Same here, i only seemed to notice a change when i went from the apple earphones to the Sennheiser's, but not the other way around. Clealy shows which is the better design.

I am really trying to get some feedback on what to buy that are similar in sound quality to the Sennheisers but are a "Y" style, matbe I'll start a new thread with a different title.
