Been looking all over and can't seem to find anything already posted on this forum or the net. I am looking for a reliable, POWERED 6 pin firewire card for my PCMCIA slot (Win XP). I am going to be doing a fair amount of travelling this coming year and would love to be able to play (AND CHARGE) my Pod directly form the laptop firewire card. I have builtin firewire on the laptop, but only 4 pin, so no juice there. I really don't want one of those cards (OrangeMicro) that needs an external wall plug, I'd like to have it all run through the laptop. Any ideas? Thanks.

You're not going to get a "powered" PCMCIA card. The PCMCIA slot doesn't have enough juice to power the iPod.

So, you're stuck with 1 of two options:

1) get a card w/an external power supply as you've seen

2) get a card that has 2 6-pin ports. One port goes to the iPod, the other (w/a second firewire cable), goes to the iPod's AC adaptor.

You can also get a firewire hub that would provide tranfers and power at the same time. I have one myself and it recharges my ipod when I shut off my laptop.

I've got a 2 port (6-pin) PCMCIA card. If I've read your post correctly by plugging the 2nd port into my AC adaptor that will power my Ipod while it's plugged into the other 6-pin port? This would be great if it's true. That is my only complaint is that battery life is very short when managing files with a PC...
