I have a large amount of files on my external hardrive that I wanted to put in the same folder as my iTunes folder, so I copied my iTunes folder on to my external drive, changed the folder location in the options menu, and then hit consolidate. Unfortunately, when I did this is doubled the number of files, not on the iTunes music browser, but in the folder. Luckily, since I had copied it, I still have the original library as well as the other files, so I can always delete the consolidated library. How can I avoid this problem and still consolidate my library? Thanks in advance.

You don't want to copy the files yourself. Consolidate will do that for you. If you copy then consolidate, you will indeed have duplicate copies. Just set the "iTunes Music Folder location" to whatever folder you want your music to reside in, then "Consolidate Library" to copy all the files there.

So I have to set the Itunes Music Location to a blank folder and then consolidate?

You set the iTunes Music folder location to wherever you want your files to end up. This can be an empty folder, or this can be an existing folder that already has some of your files in it. Only files that weren't already in this folder will be copied here when you consolidate.

Now it's tripling stuff whenever I put it in the iTunes folder. I had a few albums that I put in it by importing, and there were 3 copies of each file. Does anyone know what is causing this?
