i saw the funniest thing on BART (the subway in the SF Bay Area)
today.
a guy got on the train listening to his iPod and carrying it in his
hand just like they do in the TV ads. he proceeded to dance in place to
the music for the entire 30 minute train ride. and i don't mean just
head bobbing either. he was doing the moonwalk, electric bugaloo and
more. at one point he got so hot that he had to wipe his forehead with his shirt.

I would not put it past Apple that this guy was in fact paid to do this. Think about the marketing possibilities:
Each day, on some random car on the BART, a dancer comes in with an iPod. After a week, a month, however long, all these iPod posters appear in each car.
OR...maybe the guy is just a little off!

i highly doubt he was paid to do this.
Apple doesn't need to pay someone to do this, iPods are already selling like hotcakes!
It was me...............Not.
Wish I could have seen that

It would be good guerilla marketing if he was paid.
There was a spirits company that did something kinda similar. They hired good-looking regular couples to order drinks made with the liquor (can't remember what it was) and buy a round for the house. No one knew they were on the payroll. Did this at various "cool" clubs in NYC.
Apple does a hell of a lot of 'regular' advertising, but I think it's all the iPod fanatics out there on the street that are what really make the thing hot.

That definitely sounds like marketing to me. The tie-in with the current ads too close for it to just be a guy doing that on his own.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear other reports of this in other cities.

a lot of people rock out and want to dance to their music. it's not an iPod specific thing. so just because a guy was doing that with an iPod in public doesn't automatically make it some sort of Apple propaganda.

That reminds me of when I worked at Record Town in the Mall of American in Minneapolis area. It was about 1997, and Men In Black was out, as well as WuTang's new CD, and a few others. This young kid would come in about once a week, go to one of the listening stations that had one of those CDs (or whatever was new), and listen to MOST of a CD. He wouldn't sing out lout, but he busted a move and cut a rug the whole time. We never told him to calm down because frankly he wasn't hurting anyone. A few customers took a 2nd glance at him, but realized he was harmless. He just really liked to listen to music I suppose.

Maybe he was filming for a new website.
iPod's REAL dirty secret:
"iPod's huge internal capacity and great output may make you dance like an idiot in public."
