Hi,

I have a 5G 60GB ipod video.

The problem I have started to experience in the last two weeks is that whenever I plug it in via the USB lead the whole PC freezes/locks up. This is either with or without iTunes running.

When it first started to happen it would be after a few minutes, but now it is (no exageration) within 2 seconds of it being connected so I do not even have chance to do a restore to see if that solves the problem.

It is 42GB full.

The warranty expires on 13Mar07.

Thae same happens in safe mode.

Can anybody offer advice here? Is it worth trying on a friend's machine, or can anybody confirm my iPod is done for and would not even be worth trying?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,

V

Does your i pod play music?

try going through the following:

try a reset. If it doesn't work, then try using a different USB cable. If your computer still freezes, then try it on a friends computer, and check if the i pod is atleast recognized as an external drive. If yes, then try a manual format. If this too fails, then rush to apple.

It plays some music.

Some tracks it now skips to the last second of the song and sticks there!

I am going to try it on a friend's computer tomorrow.

Try going into disk mode. Press menu + center and the play pause button for a few seconds.

Hi,
the same thing happens to me: my Win XP laptop computer freezes as soon as I connect my iPod -- if I connect the iPod through my new PCMCIA USB2 card.

If I connect the iPod through my USB1.1 onboard slot, everything works fine (but slow, obviously). The iPod also connects fine with USB2 ports on other XP computers, just won't use the PCMCIA USB 2 slot.

Any idea? The PCMCIA USB card works fine with other USB devices (pen drive, external IDE, ...), so I do not think the PCMCIA card is bad.

Is there a known interop problem between the iPod software and PCMCIA USB 2 hubs?!?

Appreciate any suggestion, tried everything I can think of.

Thanks,
BirgitD

OK keep in mind that I'm a iPod newbie.
I have the same problem and I'm researching to find an answer.

In the Apple forum I found somebody with an answer. He says that when he changed his 2.0 USB card to one of the approved cards he had no more problems. Another member replied to his post and said that it fixed his problem as well.
The thread was one year old. So I would think that there is probably newer information available. Keep searching - if you find something email me/private message.
Here's the link to the page with the approved 2.0 cards http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93405

If anybody else can point us to a thread or concur with the above info it would be much appreciated

hi, i had this problem with some ipods i have repaired. Basically your ipod hard drive is corrupt, windows is crashing trying to mount the ipod. If you connect your ipod, your system locks up, unplug it and the system comes back to life.

Bad news, i couldnt fix these ipods within windows xp due to the lock ups. i fortunately am also a mac user and could only fix the ipods with my macbook pro. so not much help im afraid unless you've got a mac?

I have a friend who owns a Mac... so what do we need to do?

Also, I believed that I cannot use a Mac-formatted iPod with Windows... once I repaired the iPod hard drive with the Mac, can I get the iPod to work with Windows again?
