Has anyone found out what the signalling protocol for the remote is on the 2/3rd gen iPods and whether there's any chance of a display remote for this?

John Maushammer dissected his 2G remote (http://www.maushammer.com/systems/ipod-remote/ipod-remote.html) and figured out the serial protocol.
I have pictures (http://www.lockup.org/dock/) of the 3rd gen remote. Turns out the microcontroller is identical-- it's only the connector that's changed.
I'd rather buy remotes at $20/pop & wire my own buttons to the micro than program a PIC or AVR, but I'm not trying to do anything fancier than put iPod controls on my steering wheel.
I wonder if the dock connector has remote signals on it. Would be nice for a car mount to do remote, power and line-out all in one simple connection.
