Hi everyone, I'm new here and I've been reading the forum about how to get an Ipod to work with Win98SE and although I have followed the instructions exactly, it just doesn?t seem to be working.

I'm running win98SE on a laptop with a PCMCIA firewire card, and I downloaded the firewire patch from the link on the forum

I have a 3rd generation 15 GB ipod and it came with a CD. It appears as "iPod 2 01 CD" when I view it from my computer which I?m a assuming has the 2.01 updater which is being referred to, and I've copied that to my computer and restored my Ipod already as per the instructions.

Now in the instructions it says
1) run apple's installer programme(setup.exe), it will load till the "welcome screen" where it says "Welcome to the Installshield Wizard for iPod For Windows download installer".

But when I put in the ?iPod 2 01 CD? CD the first box is ?choose setup language? and I have to choose a language. I tried doing file search when this box is on screen using the word ?updater? but the correct file "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" never shows up.

After choosing the language a new box appears called ?installSheild Wizard? It says ?iPod for Windows CD installer setup is preparing the install shied wizard, which will guide you through the program setup process. Please wait?

And then a new box appears called ?iPod for Windows V2.0.1? with a picture of an Ipod in the middle of it, and at the bottom there?s and ?install? button and in the bottom right hand corner there is an ?exit? button.

I tried doing a search during the ?installShield Wizard? box and the ?iPod for Windows V2.0.1? box, but the file "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" still never showed up.

What am I doing wrong??? Can somone PLEASE help me? I've read the sticky a million times, and I've tried it a million times without success. I've tried running every single "setup.exe" on the CD that came with my ipod, hoping one of them would work, but it still havent found this "updater" file. If someone could help me out, I will be forever greatful. TIA

You're not doing anything wroing. Those instructions about putting in the CD and trying to the Welcome screen where for the older versions of the CD where the Updater.exe wasn't available.

All you need to make your iPod work is to run the Updater.exe program, and click on Restore to convert it to a WiPod which you said you've already done.

Now, you're ready to start uploading with MC9, Xplay or ephpod.

<panic> I am trying to set up my sister's WIN98SE PC using Firewire to connect to my nephew's brand new (22/12/03) iPod in time for Xmas. Couple of questions please (with apologies in advance for the clear instructions on this site that I missed/misinterpreted) ...
(1) How do i tell which vesion of iPod I'm dealing with? All that I know is that it's a brand new 10GB model.
(2) I have found a "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr" file in my temporary folder. Unfortunately it's an MSI file rather than an Exe. When I click on that I get an error message saying that I need to be using a Setup.Exe.
</panic>

TIA,
Brian

<Embarassment> Oops! I neglected to mention that when I run Updater.Exe both options (Update/Restore) are greyed out. </Embarassment>

Did you download and install the firewire patch mentioned in the Win98SE sticky?

What is the Updater telling you? Is there a message there that says "no iPod detected"

If you haven't installed the patch, you need to remove your fireware card from the PC, install the patch, then install the card and fire up the PC again.

Thanks, Adam.

Yes, I did install the firewire patch before running the Updater.

The Updater doesn't give me any error message. It showS the dialog you mentioned earlier but my problem is that the "Restore" option (and the other one) is greyed out.

Brian
