Firmware Updates

I have a 30G iPod Video (generation 5) which I run with Anapod Exporer (9.0.0) and would like to know how I update iPod firmware etc.
I really dislike iTunes but am led to believe that I need iTunes to upgrade firmware (hopefully this is not true).

Your help would be much appreciated

Unfortuantly that's true, you will need iTunes for the updates. Just install it, set it to manual iPod management and just use it for the firmwares.

Do I have to update. I have had a few imprompt restarts by my Ipod after my Ipod recently crashed and I have been using Winamp so I do not have updater on my Ipod. Plus I heard that the updates are what are causing problems with alternatives to ITunes software. I have been unable to re-install ITUNES. (I believe it is becasue I am using the Winamp plugin) Bottom line-DO I NEED the updater for my Ipod?
