I am going to be the proud owner of a 20gb Ipod come Christmas, and have a question about the USB connection. I will be using the Ipod at work, and do not want to alert IT to the fact that I am chewing their bandwidth! My box has USB 1 but not 2, so my question is how much slower is file transfer with this connection? Also any advice on how to speed this up.

Thanks in advance.

USB 2.0 (aka High Speed USB) has a transfer rate of 480 Mbps. USB 1.1 has a transfer rate of 12Mbps. So, it is A LOT slower. The only way to speed this up is to put in a USB 2.0 or Firewire card.

as long as you arent transfering alot very often using USB1.1, its not that bad. in my case it only takes about 5sec per song and about a minute to transfer an entire album. this of course is a hell of a lot slower than USB2.0 and Firewire, but its bearable.

USB1 typically transfers songs to the Ipod at about 40% of the speed of firewire. So it will take 2.5x as long on average.

Thanks a lot for the replies - I will try it with 1, and see how it goes.

i was told that some computers with 1.1 ports don't even work at all. seems to me that buying a firewire or usb 2.0 card will make working with your ipod much much easier.

Chewing their bandwidth? they won't be able to tell you're using the USB ports. Unless you mean bandwidth..as in you'll be downloading music. I'm kinda confused :'[

as am I. ....they would have to have some pretty sophistocated software + be using the usb at the same time to be able to even have a need to monitor its usage?? --strange
