I've seen mention of the Harmon/Kardon Drive+Play and it's lack of the iPod's 'Shuffle Songs' feature on the main menu. This was pretty disappointing, since there was no way to simply randomly play songs on startup. It would always play the first song in the (alphabetically sorted) song list, at which point I always had to listen to the same song and bloat its playcount, or keep skipping past it every time.
My solution: I created a 1 second blank mp3 called .Starting. I then created a playlist that contains only this song, and set it to sync to the iPod.
Since the Drive+Play lists the songs alphabetically by title, it starts with .Starting, then randomly jumps to the next song. Also, if at any point I want to play a random song I can go to the songs list and choose the first song in the list, .Starting, at what point it then jumps to another random song.
Problem solved!
Anyhow, sorry for this novel of a post, but I'm hoping it may help another somewhat disappointed Drive+Play owner out there...
