So I was happy to see the release of the iPhone, but while I love the music and wide screen video capability, I don't need the phone features, etc. I have a 60 gig iPod with video and I am still awaiting the true video iPod. Do you think it will still come out one off these days? I was a little disappointed the 5G iPod is still the "newest" iPod. Any thoughts?

The iPhone might be the glimpse of the future of the iPod.

Have fun waiting.

Inevitable. Sounds like a perfect lineup for the holiday season doesn't it?

somebody should tell apple that the martin luther king day market is real big so they should release the 6g by then

I don't expect that we'll see any upgraded iPods until after the iPhone release. It's obvious from the tone of the Keynote today that Apple wanted to make as big of a bang as possible with the iPhone, and releasing an iPod in the same style before the iPhone comes out will take impact away from the iPhone itself (and customers away from Cingular, which Apple now has an unprecedented sort of business relationship with).

However, I'm sure that we'll see a similar unit as an upgraded iPod soon after... Apple is not going to ultimately limit themselves to just Cingular customers (or any cellular phone customers).

Everyone's been calling the widescreen video iPod a 6G...I really hope this isn't the case. My 4G is pretty old, and I'll need something new soon. I have to pamper it enough as it is, with a hard drive and a scratch-friendly case - the last thing I want is something with a screen covering the entire front!

I'm hoping the 6G ditches the crap plastic they've used for years, like they did with the nano.

I could see a video-oriented iPod as a separate line, but it'll be a lot bigger than the iPhone (to handle a hard drive and a sufficient battery). No so dissimlar from the Creative PMPs, but Apple is pretty good at shrinking this stuff down.

yea i agree with you. i hope they dont turn the newest ipod into a true video player, its really not meant to be. im happy with my 80gb and the things it can do.

i would also like to see them ditch the scratch plastic that they have currently been using, in favor of the aluminum that the nano now uses. that would make the ipod video look sooooo much nicer and sleeker, not to mention no more scratches. IMO, i think apple will do this in the near future also, making the new 6G slimmer and higher gb capacity, as has been done in the past.

I'm in two minds. One, the clickwheel is the more practical way to do things IMHO. But OTOH the touch screen as implemented by Apple is so amazing that it might just be the core feature of the 6G iPod. While the clickwheel is the better solution, the touch screen is a glamorous marketing tool and puts all the iPod competitors to shame.

So here is a possible road map: hi-cap iPods get touchscreen, then nano gets it a year or two afterwards and at the same time gets video playback (battery technology allowing). You read it here first!

That sounds like the most reasonable outcome. That's my prediction also. True 6G Video touchscreen iPods with large capacities for the fall. But now what happens when a good chunk of people start complaing why the hell there isn't Wifi, Bluetooth, or cellphone capabilites on the 6G? I can hear their cries now...

I have a phone, and I'm only on Pay as you go. I don't need an iPhone even though they look amazing.

Give me the same device with a larger harddrive and just the iPod features and I'll be happy. I sure hope they do this soon. The 5G seems like it came out ages ago, I'm bored with it. My money is burning a hole in my pocket!!

I AGREE. Just make sure to keep the WiFi (Bluetooth as well ??) and the ability to use for Internet/email. God knows why the Zune didn't make theirs an internet browser ????

I am confident that we will see a new iPod this year. If the music and video capabilities are anything like the iPhone's itll be an amazing iPod.

As said, outside of the coolness factor, a full screen video iPod is pretty useless to me as I use it primarily as a MUSIC device anyway.

The way video sits as a side feature to music is great but to make video dominate over music isn't what I'd want.

Well, from what I've seen of the iPhone thus far, I'm actually not too concerned about the interface from a music playback point of view. It's certainly a larger screen, but I think Apple has made good use of the larger screen, even for those whose primary function would be music playback.

The on-screen Coverflow view is very nice, the album artwork displays in a very nice resolution, and the entire scrolling interface is far more smooth and intuitive than the clickwheel.

I was very concerned before that a full-screen device would lose it's focus on the ability to play music well, but having actually seen the iPhone (which I'm now certain is a preview of things to come), almost all of those reservations are gone.

The only issue I can see is that it would have increased fragility compared to the existing 5G due to the larger screen, but durability is the space that the Nano is really supposed to fill anyway.

Personally, I would have no reservations about using an iPod in the new iPhone style in any situation that I would use my current 5G.
