I posted the following story yesterday at another Mac forum site that I go to and it got a great response. I thought I'd share it here in the hopes of kick-starting another great discussion. To be fair, only 17 of the 23 iPods that I have purchased were for me.

Here is the full list...

1. December 2001 – My 1st!! – the Original White 5 Gig iPod
2. April 2002 – Sold my Original (I still regret selling it) and purchased the White 10 Gig iPod
3. August 2002 – Sold my 10 Gig and picked up the White 20 Gig
4. April 2003 – Upgraded my 20 Gig to the new White 20 Gig with solid state scroll wheel and four buttons
5. September 2003 – Upgraded from the 20 Gig to the White 40 Gig with solid-state scroll wheel and four buttons. This iPod still holds a special place in my heart as it represented the first time I was able to have all of my music on my iPod. At the time, I had about 32 Gigs of music.
6. February 2004 – Purchased a Green 4 Gig iPod Mini as a gift for my wife. Due to huge demand in the US, the mini was not available to be ordered in Canada yet. I purchased this iPod on E-Bay and had it shipped to a friends address in Boston and then had my friend ship it up to me.
7. April 2004 – Bought my 1st iPod Mini for myself. I ordered a Pink one online from the Apple Store. I got an E-Mail telling me that it would ship in 1-2 weeks (see below.)
8. March 2004 – I was in my local Best Buy and saw that they had a Pink Mini in stock. I bought it and rushed home to cancel my online order. Just my luck – Apple had shipped it early. I ended up selling the one that Apple shipped to me (still sealed) to a friend who was looking to buy one.
9. July 2004 – Upgraded to the white 40 Gig with Click Wheel
10. December 2004 – Upgraded to the White 60 Gig iPod Photo. This was my most expensive iPod purchase ever at $749 Canadian. I almost skipped this one but decided to treat myself after receiving a pretty sweet bonus that year.
11. January 2005 – Purchased the 512 Meg Shuffle (just because!!)
12. February 2005 – Upgraded my Mini to the new 6 Gig version
13. September 2005 – Upgraded from my mini to the new Nano (the 4 Gig version in White)
14. October 2005 – Upgraded to the White 60 Gig iPod with Video
15. April 2006 – Bought a Black 30 Gig iPod with Video as a gift for my wife
16. June 2006 – Bought a 1 Gig White Nano for my father-in-law as a Birthday gift
17. July 2006 – Bought a 1 Gig White Nano for myself. (I was convinced that new Nano would be announced in the June timeframe so I had recently sold my 4 Gig version. When Apple and Nike came out with the Nike+ system though, I had to pick up a small Nano just so I could use their new running system until the new line of Nanos arrived.)
18. September 2006 – Upgraded to the Black 80 Gig iPod Video
19. September 2006 – Upgraded to the new 2nd Generation Nano (a 4 Gig Pink one)
20. October, 2006 – I decided that the new Product Red Nano was much cooler than my Pink one so I upgraded to the 4 Gig Red Nano.
21. December 2006 – Bought a White 30 Gig iPod with Video as a Christmas gift for my parents
22. December 2006 – I purchased a 1 Gig 2nd Generation Shuffle for a local United Way Charity Silent Auction. (It sold for more than I paid for it!)
23. December 2006 – I decided to purchase the new 1 Gig 2nd Generation for myself too.

How many iPods have you purchased? If you're interested in the backstory, you can read the whole article at http://torants.blogspot.com/2007/01/cupertino-i-may-have-problem-pre.html

Well, I haven't purchased quite as many (only 17), but my iPod ownership doesn't go back as far either....

Oct 2004 - My First iPod - 40Gb iPod photo (wanted the 60Gb, but it wasn't in stock yet)
Nov 2004 - Bought my wife a 20Gb 4G iPod (monochrome)
Sep 2005 - Upgraded my wife to a 20Gb 4G iPod 'Color' (photo) (included with a Powerbook purchase)
Oct 2005 - Upgraded myself to a 60Gb 5G iPod (iPod photo went on eBay)
Nov 2005 - Upgraded my wife to a 30Gb 5G iPod (20Gb color was sold to an associate, 20Gb mono was given to a friend)
Jun 2005 - Bought a 1G 4Gb iPod Nano with Nike+ Sport Kit for my wife
Jul 2005 - Bought a 1G 4Gb iPod Nano for myself (also with Nike+ Sport kit)
Jul 2005 - Bought a U2 Special Edition 5G iPod as a gift for a friend
Sep 2005 - Upgraded to a 80Gb 5.5G iPod (60Gb 5G was given to a friend)
Sep 2005 - Upgraded my Nano to a 2G 4Gb Silver Nano
Sep 2005 - Upgraded my wife's Nano to a 2G 2Gb Silver Nano (1G 4Gb went to a friend)
Sep 2005 - Bought a 2G 2Gb Silver Nano for my mother
Oct 2005 - Bought a 2G Shuffle
Nov 2005 - Upgraded my wife's Nano to a 2G 8Gb Red Nano (replaced 30Gb 5G & 2G Nano, both sold to associates)
Dec 2005 - Upgraded my Nano to a 2G 8Gb Black Nano (4Gb went on eBay)
Dec 2005 - Bought a 2G Shuffle for my sister
Dec 2005 - Bought a 2G 2Gb Silver Nano for my father

At this point, I only still have three personally (80Gb 5.5G, 8Gb Nano, 2nd-Gen Shuffle), and my wife has consolidated on the Red 8Gb Nano. Others have been either sold or handed off to close friends and family.

I got a pink mini in May 2005 , then sold in December that year to get a 2GB white nano. Then in September I decided I missed my old mini so I asked for one for Christmas. I got it just before Christmas. The battery life was awful! I sold both my nano and mini and got the new pink nano that I love!

I can't remember dates, but all in the last 2 years, or maybe just over one.

My personal purchases.

Blue 4Gb Mini --- gone
4G 20Gb Monochrome --- gone
4G 20Gb Colour
White Shuffle (1G?, anyway the white long one)
5.5G 80Gb Black Video (which I freaking love) .... but my family hates ....

+ family ipods

4G 20Gb U2 --- gone
4G 40Gb Colour
5.5G 80Gb White Video
2G 6Gb Silver Mini
2 x White shuffles as above, oh wait 3, one went swimming. :D

So we've purchased 12 up all, 3 gone, and one dead.

Wow.. I can't imagine getting that many. Granted, I'm sure over the years it will build up as new versions come out and I have enough money, but right now:

December 26, 2006 Bought my first iPod: a 2G 2GB Silver Nano
January 1, 2007 Decided that 2GB may not be enough room so.. for the heck of it, I exchanged that iPod for a 2g 4GB Silver Nano, which will soon be getting colored iSkins.. I haven't decided if I want to get the three pack with purple, blue and silver, or get that and the one with white and black.. 'cause I want black, as well.

My family isn't very iPod-y, either. My brother got a 2g 2GB Silver Nano on the 26th, as well, and kept that as it was. My dad has a diff. type of MP3 player. My mom is planning on getting an iPod at sometime in her life, but not for quite some time.. and my sister thinks it's dumb to waste money on a whateverGB (Nano, she would get) when she has as many GBs as she wants with her CDs. Lol. Some of my cousins have iPods, but I think that is it.

i used to go through one discman or one MD player a year, i put that down to moving part failure. i had one ipod mini for a year which i abused (the naff belt clip meant it was being dragged along behind my back wheel alot, lol), now still on my FIRST proper ipod after two years, pleased with that, though i've never dropped it, can't see why i won't get another year or two from it! but really i'm glad to get two years from it.

I have had only 6 iPods total.

1- 7/2003 - 3rd gen 30GB - my first. $499 - Still have this one and it still works but needs a new battery.

2- 10/2004 - 4th gen 60GB iPod Photo came with everything in the box. $599 - Still have it but needs a new HD. A corrupt external HD damaged the HD on this one.

3- 10/2005 - 5th gen 60GB Video $399 + tx & shipping total $431.92 - Corrupt HD damaged this one as well.

Replaced the two damaged ones with these two. One is for videos only and the other for music only.
4- 9/2006 - 5th gen 80GB 5.5 $ 349 + tx & shipping total $398.82

5- 10/2006 - 5th gen 80GB 5.5 $same as above.

Edit: I forgt this one.....
6- Have a 1GB 1st gen Shuffle for about 2004 for $149 + $12.29 = $161.29 but couldn't find the info on this one yet.

Edit: -Make that 7 iPods in total. Purchased one red iPod Nano 8GB (3/2007), 2nd gen refurb for $209 + tx. One clear case $15.52 + 1 lanyard $14.99 + screen protectors for $13.32 for Nano & 80GB + earbuds $99 + tx. Total $381.96

Holy crap. And I thought having 4 iPods was a lot.
I'm happy having 4 iPods though. I own every single variant of iPod ever made (except Photo)

May 2004 - 2G iPod Mini (4GB) -> $249.99 CDN
December 2004 - 1G iPod Shuffle (512MB) -> $129.99 CDN
May 2005 - 1G iPod Nano (1GB) -> $149.99 CDN
January 2007 - 5.5G iPod Video (30GB) -> $299.99 CDN

Not bad for a 13-year-old, eh?

* Been dreaming of a full-size iPod ever since 2003, but my parents didn't trust me with the "responsibility". I'm glad to have waited, and now my Podding life is complete.

Uh...I'm afraid that's not every variant?

When it comes to family members, I don't really know because I spend more time talking and hanging out with them than staring at their music players.

Sheesh. I just bought my second and felt guilty since my first still works fine.

May 2005 - 3G iPod 15gb
March 2007 - 2G Nano Red 4gb

Family iPods (I didn't purchase any of them though):
Husband - 2G Nano Silver 4gb
Sister - 4G iPod Video 30gb
SIL - 2G Nano 4gb (don't know what color)

Got the Nano for podcast features I don't have on my 3G and longer battery life. Use the 3G with Ice Tune in my daughter's room to play her lullabies on.

2. 4th-Gen 40Gb iPod (with click wheel, B&W)
3. 4th-Gen 60Gb iPod (original version, called the "iPod Photo")
4. 1st-Gen 512Mb Shuffle
5. 1st-Gen 4Gb Nano, black
6. 5th-Gen 60Gb iPod, black
7. 2nd-Gen 2Gb Nano
8. 2nd-Gen 1Gb Shuffle
9. 5.5-Gen 80Gb iPod, black

I'm sure I've missed some but...

5GB Original iPod from eBay
10GB Original iPod from eBay 10 minutes later  Sold the 5GB to my mother (which I now have back in its original box etc.)
30GB Photo (Sold)
40GB Photo (traded the 10GB + cash for it and then sold it for an overall profit)
30GB Video (Sold)
4GB Green Mini (Sold)
6GB Green Mini (still have - broken click wheel)
4GB Broken Pink Mini (still have)
512MB Shuffle (sold)
60GB Video (Sold when 80GB model was released)
80GB Video (my current iPod)
30GB Video (for the wife)

Just the other day I dropped into the Apple store and bought 4 green Shuffles and 1 green 4GB Nano as prizes at a team event. Was fun shopping like that :)

I've had 5 or 6 depending how you look at it:
Jun 2004: 1G 4GB iPod mini in blue (for myself)
Jul 2004: 1G 4GB iPod mini in gold (for my wife)
Apr 2005: 1G 4G iPod mini in blue refurb (replacement from Apple due to failed clickwheel on original)
Oct 2005: 5G 60GB iPod in black (for myself; sold blue refurb iPod mini to friend - still going strong with him)
Dec 2006: 2G iPod shuffle in silver (for daughter)
Mar 2007: 2G 8GB iPod nano in black (for myself, emergency replacement due to badly wounded 5G)

Right now it's a 3.5 iPod family, one for each member and the wounded 5G I need to get sent out for an estimate.

23? Woah, that's even more than I!
But, all the iPod's I'm counting have been for me, at least for a time.

1. Original 5 GB. 850 chf, most expensive so far. Didn't sell it, now have the dieselsweeties shirt "I had an iPod before you even knew what one was"
2. 3rd generation 30GB, brought over by a friend going to the US, much cheaper that way.
(somewhere around now I gained a reputation as "iPod Guy" fixing iPods. I'm having that nickname printed on my grad shirt )
3. A broken 4th generation 20GB from a friend. The screen was cracked, but it had a 40GB disk, and I bought it for really cheap (40 chf).
4. Another 4th generation 20GB from a different friend. With a working screen, broken hard drive cable. My shortest-lived "main" iPod, my shipment from ebay arrived a week after
5. iPod Photo 40GB. Bought on ebay with a "broken hard disk" - turned out to be the disk cable again. But I had a spare, so fitted it gladly. This is now my main iPod (I haven't moved newer, because I'm still on an iBook G3 and need firewire to update).
6. 4th gen 20GB with a broken screen and hold switch, which I replaced with my spares. I then lent this one to a friend, who gave it back, now I'm lending it to another friend. Haven't seen it in months, but I'll get it back by the summer I hope.
7. 4th gen 20GB from a friend, melted the hold switch plastic casing. All the board were still fine though, fixed it, and lent it to a friend. She's nice though, so eventually I sold it to her, which I'm regretting a little (not too much though).
8. iPod Mini 1st gen from ebay, my mum thought I could fix it. Plugged it in, all looked good, listened to music, but when I unplugged it, it went off for good. Hasn't worked since, it's a dodgy microdrive or motherboard or both I think.
9. Two 4th gen 20GBs whcih weren't working well from a friend and his brother. Cheap, but unforutnately the hard disk cables were broken, so I now can't use them.
10. See above.
11. Another (no, I'm not double-counting, they're in front of me) 4th gen 20GB with a broken hard disk cable from yet another friend. I have this iPod fixing arrangement: if I can't fix your iPod, I'll buy it. But it doesn't always work to my favour, you see.
12. An iPod mini 2nd gen I never really bought, but is broken in the same way as number 8, and has been sitting in my drawer for months now.
13. Another iPod 1st gen (10GB this time) I saw on ebay. But the motherboard's out.
14. For christmas, a 2nd generation iPod from ebay! Would have completed my collection, but I gave a friend my 3rd gen iPod's screen after I broke the remote wire, so now I'm still needing a 3rd gen. High prices paid! The 2nd gen's firewire port is messed up (burnt out), but I can graft the disk into another for updating.
15. An iPod shuffle, given me by a friend. Only problems with software :D
16. Two iPod minis. One with a fried motherboard, as the rest, and one I fixed and gave back to the owner. Next day, the owner broke the microdrive. But apart from the clicking, it still turns on, so there's hope yet!
17. See above.
18. iPod nano 1st gen black, 4GB. Definitely the coolest for now, I resoldered a broken hold switch and bought a new screen on ebay. The old one worked, but colours were horrificly washed out, and it really wasn't happening. So a new one for 20 chf including shipping from hong kong, plus the price of 50 chf for the iPod was well worth it.
19. I just remembered I bought my brother's to give to a friend who was leaving, but my friends never pitched in, so it cost me 200 chf. And then it got stolen from her car a couple of weeks later :'-(

Non-pods of mine (I can't get beyond 19 iPods for now, but I have alternatives):
19. pPod on my pocket pc (ssshh)
20. Rio 600 (the REAL MP3 player, before the iPod and iTunes with SoundJam MP!) What's really, really unbelievable is that because Apple bought SoundJam for making iTunes, the drivers were kept. So I can still update this 32MB antique with iTunes 7! Bought off ebay to replace a stolen one, that might count as 2.
21. MiniDisc player, bought only a few months before the iPod was released. We were on holiday when it was, me and my brother bought the first 2 of the 2nd shipment to arrive (the first had sold out within a week). Still going strong, but minidiscs are really only useful in my car stereo now.
22. Memory stick MP3 player SD card reader radio voice recorder from ebay, to use my 1GB camera card as a memory stick, and transfer stuff to and from my pocket pc. Good, but the player part is broken, so I only use it as a memory stick now.
23. Nokia 5140 and Sony Ericsson P800 old phones, used for music once or twice. P800 is better quality than the 5140, 5140 only has 4MB and takes AMR files. Ugh.
24. Chinavasion's Oakley Thump ripoffs, something instead of my logitech wireless headphones for iPod when biking or snowblading. Much, much cheaper than Oakley's, but the flip-up plastic part broke, so I had to melt it back together with a soldering iron.
25. Just to match the original poster, I have to find something to put here. My old tape player? I used it on a service project once. An iPod shuffle 1G I'm fixing for a friend that's in my house right now? The numerous iPods I've fixed for people before (newest being iPod video as yet, I worry about whether I could disassemble the nano 2G).

The difference in this is that I still own all these iPods, I've only sold one on. Maybe no major record, but this collection of broken ones is doing me well. Paperweights ;).

Peace,
-Pete-

December 25th 2001: 1st gen 5GB, Christmas Present.
October 2005: White 30GB 5th gen, bought it myself.

I really can't stomach buying new iPods very often...which is why I don't plan on buying another one until maybe 2010 earliest.

I came late to the iPod party, but I've hopefully made up for it a bit:

September 2004: fourth-generation 20GB iPod. I had a hard time letting go of it just because it was my first.

January 2006: fifth-generation 30GB iPod. Still have it, still love it.

February 2007: second-generation 1GB iPod shuffle. Such a great design for exercise -- it may be awhile before I let go.

I have two.

The 60 gig iPod video which holds my whole music collection and is rapidly filling up. I mainly use that at home when I don't want to turn on the computer or I'm tying up the computer for other purposes. Also good for longer trips.

For shorter trips, and general away from home use, I usually prefer my new blue 2G shuffle. It's seemingly weightless, and seems to play a long, long time between charges.

I'm trying very hard to come up with a reason to justify also getting a Nano!

Inspired by the original poster, I just did a quick count and came up with the number 32, not including 2 or 3 iPods that were purchased and returned, but including both gifts and units that were purchased for iLounge as opposed to my personal collection. Keep the numbers rolling - I'm guessing that Dennis's number is pretty crazy, too, but none of us is in Karl Lagerfeld (or corporate purchasing) territory. :-)

1. 4G 20GB. Had wanted one since the 3rd Generation came out, but could not afford(i was young with a $5 a week allowance.. took a while)

2. 5G 30GB. It is nice, i love the ability to watch episodes of 'The Office', '30 Rock', 'Law and Order', and SNL, but i have outgrown it. i will be getting next generation's 80GB.

Dec. 2005 - 4GB 2nd Gen. silver mini as a birthday/Christmas present (usually I think it's a gyp to get combined presents, but this time I wasn't complaining!)

Feb. 2006 - 30GB white video iPod, still have it. Sold the mini on eBay.

Before my first iPod I had some crappy no-name 256MB MP3 player I got as a gift from work. Bleah. But I thought it was awesome at the time (as before that I'd only used CD Walkmen for years).

More interesting is the story of the effect iPods have had on my home computing:

I had a desktop from Dell for much longer than I should have (it was running Windows ME for God's sake). It was top-shelf when I got it so it aged better than a lot of computers would. However, when I got my silver mini I was sorely dissapointed that I'd need XP to use it. I did manage a workaround using the RealPlayer music manager for a little while, but I realised I also wanted iTunes (as had gotten a gift card and heard it was a better music buying experience all around).

So I paid to have my OS upgraded to XP, and got iTunes, and all was well. For a while.

The problem was the computer was really starting to show its age, and was becoming so slow it was difficult to use (and it's a problem as I use Photoshop for my day-to-day work). So in October 2006 I was in the market for a semi-inexpensive desktop to replace it. I had used Apples in college (I went to art school) but their prices were prohibitive for a then-starving artist. But having used iPods and iTunes, I was getting the bug for great Apple design again, and the desire to have a computer that my iPod would work flawlessly with.

Fortunately, Apple had just released the new Core Duo Mac minis, and the prices of previous generations of minis was dropping. So I paid a substantial discount for an Intel Core Solo mini, and am loving it. I've since supplemented it with an older G4 'desklamp' iMac (I honestly like the design more than the newer flat iMacs) and have become something of a Mac hobbyist and tinkerer - my first project was cracking open my mini to add more RAM (and if you don't think that's impressive for a first-time computer fix, look up some videos on how to do it!).

Macs rock.

oh dear. This will be faintly embarassing:

1st: 3rd gen 20 Gb c. Jun 2004, sold on eBay in 2006 for a surprisingly good price
2nd: 4th gen 40Gb colour in 2005 (currently resident in the kitchen in an Altec im3c speaker)
3rd: pink 2nd gen mini for my wife (still used every day)
4th: 1st gen shuffle 512 Mb (given to my niece)
5th: 1st gen shuffle 1Gb (still the best sounding iPod ever)
6th: 1st gen shuffle 1Gb for my wife (used on plane trips)
7th: 4th gen iPod U2 20Gb (I think I've used it three times)
8th: white iPod nano 1st gen (also passed onto my niece)
9th: black nano 1st gen (use it in the car)
10th: white 5th gen video 30Gb (used daily in the bathroom in a logic-3 speaker, the one with 8 speakers and a passive bass radiator - really good)
11th: blue nano 2nd gen
12th: silver new gen shuffle

13th likely to be a pink shuffle for my wife!

OMG, this is sad. And my headphone listing would be even worse...!

4th Gen iPod 20GB (given to my mum)
4th Gen iPod photo 40GB (given to my cousin)
1st Gen iPod shuffle 1GB (gift, broken)
2nd Gen iPod mini (gift)
5th Gen iPod video 80GB (in use)

What do everyone do with the USB/Firewire cables that Apple ships with the iPod. I use the same one to sync up the iPods, and there are unused cables lying around all over my desk.

Not on my list...

Hi my name's Airin and I'm a ipod addict!

Yup, happy to join the 'family'.

My first was a 4 Gb blue mini. How I love to skateboard and unicycle with this little 'pod. I'm thinking maybe I should try to scoop a pink mini before mini's disappear completely.

Then two first gen shuffles; one in sick bay right now while the other lives in its portable speaker stand in the bedroom.

Next, a black nano but it just felt to fragile after the mini so I gave it to my sister-in-law in trade for a felted hoodie.

Another black nano, refurb this time, for my little brother who wanted one for his truck.

And then another nano, white this time and also refurb, for my best friend to celebrate that fact that she survived the first year of parenting their first child.

And finally the 30 Gb ipod video that lives in our home stereo unit in the living room and holds all my music plus three photo shows, one audio book and loads of podcasts.

Now, I've got to be going.....where on craigslist did I see that pink mini again....?

AHHHHHHH
03-30-2007, 04:07 PM
Wow

5 for me.

1 512MB shuffle
sold shuffle for 1 Silver ipod mini(second generation)
sold ipod mini to purchase a black nano 2GB
sold black nano for 30GB white ipod video
Ipod video had some problems so I begged my dad for the u2 5.5 ipod video

I fixed the white video so now I have 2 working ones  :D

I kinda miss the mini :(

1. May 2004 3G 40GB purposely bought to hold all my music.
2. June 2004 iPod mini gold for the gym because the first one was too huge and heavy.
3. July 2004 iPod mini pink because it was pretty :)
4. Sep 2005 4gb nano in black--sweetest piece of equipment ever! (sold "goldie" to an ex and "pinky" to my boss)
5. Sep 2005 4gb nano in white just to see what I'd like better. Turns out I liked the black better, so sold the white nano on eBay (loaded with music) for waaaaayyyy more than I paid for it. That spawned an idea.
6-56. Sep-Oct 2005 iPod nanos to sell. I had a huge market, but due to naivete, didn't make as much as I could have :(
57. Oct 2005 5G 60GB white video to upgrade (ran out of space on the 3G and sold it to my other boss for his daughter)
58. Oct 2005 By accident 5G 60GB black video. Seems the store charged twice and shipped twice. No big deal, filled up the iPod with music JLo videos and and sold it for about $400 more than cost during the Christmas holiday .
59. Oct 2006 4GB Product red ipod nano. Had always wanted a red nano and this was perfect--Apple "red" my mind! (Black nano sold to my brother)
60-79. Oct 2006 Product red nanos to sell.

Nov 2003 - 20GB 3rd gen white.

April 2007 - 2Gb 2nd gen nano silver (goes with me everywhere).

Jun/Jul 2003 - 3G iPod 30GB - £400 (gave that to my father and it still works great)
Early 2005 - 4G iPod Photo 60GB - £320 (gave that to my ex when I went to get my new one)
Nov 2006 - iPod Mini Silver 4GB (received this off my ex for giving her the 60GB Photo, probably going to sell on eBay)
Dec 2006 - 5.5GB iPod Black 80GB - £259 (my current iPod)

My father also has a Silver Mini 4GB and my brother has a iPod Nano Red 4GB. On top of that I brought an iSkin case for the iPod Photo (£10) and also an Alpine KCA-420i iPod Interface Adapter (£70) for my Alpine stereo. My father recently got some of those portable bose speakers which the iPod sits in so he can listen to music in hotels without the headphones. Plus I have brought 1 track from iTunes which cost me 79p!

So that makes my total iPod expenditure...£1059.79!! Add another £800 on that for my MacBook and all in all Apple have done pretty well out of me.

I brought my first iPod while I was in Canada visiting family. There was some small electrical store in a shopping mall which were selling a 3g 15gb which along with the 20gb model were out of stock almost everywhere.

I kept that one for about a year I think, then the new line of "clickwheel" iPods were introduced and I wanted to upgrade to a 20gb...in the end I found a 3g 40gb on eBay for the same price, new and sealed. I decided to skip the monochrome 4g in the end.

That crashed out within a few months and I think I went to the Bluewater Apple store about 4 times that year, each time they sympathetically swapped my 'Pod with another new one...in the end I had 4 replacement 40gb iPods!

Despite problems, my dad was taken by my iPod and went and brought a 60gb Photo for himself. Then he realised that the only time he really listens to music is in his car...and for that he has a CD changer so well this gathered dust until I started using it.

As a 17th birthday present, I was given a 30gb 5g 'Pod, which I loved until it died on me.

Now im back to my 40gb 3g..it seems to be working fine at the moment, so im not too bothered about replacing it...if I buy another one and it breaks im going to throw it at one of the Apple "Geniuses" stomp on it smashmyipod.com style and buy a Zen. I doubt I could take another iPod loss:o

Up to two so far....

1) XMas 2003 - 3G 40GB - Both my sister and myself each got one, so I guess you could call it 1a and 1b ;)

Worked AOK from then until my honeymoon - 5/24/2006. We were travelling from one hotel to another on Maui in a soft top Jeep Wrangler w/ full doors, loaded to the roll bar, and stopped to see one of the sights (a natural lava tube that the ocean waves shoot through like a "blowhole") and it was about .25 miles from the parking area and out of sight from the lot. About 12 cars were there when we parked. When we came back, we were the only vehicle left and something looked odd. Got up to the Jeep and saw the passenger side window smashed, and they took anything in a bookbag or smaller from the vehicle, even stuff underneath the case of 14! pineapples we had in the back. Of course they took the bag with our paper airline tickets and my iPod among other things. Cops said it was addicts looking for $$$ to buy either coke or crystal meth. They had to be on something because they broke a window out of a SOFT TOP Wrangler, where the other windows have zippers.... Anyways that lead to the insurance company purchasing me a:

2) June 2006 - 5G 60GB Black iPod. Basically I argued that I needed to have as much functionality as my previous unit, which meant that the only new item that was the same or bigger than the 40GB was the 60. All in all I like it, although it seems to freeze up / flake out more than the trusty 3G, which I would take back in a heartbeat due to the touch controls.

3) I also bought a 1GB 1G Shuffle for my now wife (was girlfriend at the time) the day they were released at the King of Prussia Apple Store along with a Mac Mini :)

I had 3 ipods, I have 2 now. I'm not interested in getting a new ipod until the one I have fails and is beyond repair. I'm more concerned with getting as much music as I can.

I wouldn't mind getting a u2 ipod and a green/silver ipod minis.
