now, i have had my own 4th gen vintage ipod for about two years now, and it is starting to show its age, marks on the back, tuffs of the screen, even that wonderful click wheel is showing rub marks on it. this is after two years of near constant use, i use my ipod all the time, i listen on the train to work, on the airplane, anywhere you would use your ipod i do. i dont use a case either, i have a leather jacket that holds my ipod and attaches to the front of my bag, which my ipod slips into, but it doenst cover the front or the top, so it is quite open to the elements.

i dont mind a few marks on my ipod, give it a sense of it being lived in, and it has suffered a few bad falls, knocks and even a kick, and it works fine, better than fine, it works like the day i got it, apart from shorter battery life, but that is not because of any of the knocks it has gotten, what i was wondering is what has your ipod survived? what has it had to put up through, and still come out punching, and if not punching but at least working?

I used to have a 4th gen, and that thing was extemely durable. One time I was changing clothes in a bathroom and I hung my pants over the stall and I forgot my iPod was in my pocket. It fell out on the tile and cracked open. Popped it back together and it worked fine. A couple months later it started acting up but I think it was just age.

My dad's silver 1G Mini survived a fall from a ski lift into the snow. Luckily the lift supports were numbered so we just remembered the two numbers it was between. We [skiid?] went and looked for it and when we found it it was still playing!

My mini has survived soda, wine, and numerous falls. My 5G and Nano, just numerous falls.

As is evident, I drop things often. :)

My 3G had one hell of a fall the first day I got it
It survived a battery replacement, and Im gonna replace it sometime real soon
The back of it is completely brushed, it survived 3 restoration, one ipodlinux installation gone bad, a changing of fonts etc...
It's still rocking really well, I don't see it dying anytime soon...Oh and the original earbuds are still in a perfect condition

i find that my earphones dont last half as long, they have dropped and i have stepped on a pair when walking, and things like that, i have a remote thing, which came with another pair that did last long either, the remote too, i sometimes put my ipod in my pocket, and with all the walking the but where the cable joins the ipod started to fray a bit, it finally gave out, and now i have two parts of an ipod remote.

My 5G Video survived multiple falls at the warehouse I work in, I'm not talking little falls I'm talking falls off of lifts. However, it WAS in a shock resistant case.

in a warehouse, i assume the ground it hit was hard, does the ipod still work like it should, and what damage did it take?

My first ipod was a 10Gb version with the 4 buttons above the wheel, with everything being touch sensitive.

I was riding my bike home from the beach, when I changed songs and went to put it into my backpack. It slipped, and fell to the ground. It fell, did a few cartwheels, and slid for about 10-15 feet. I went back expecting the sorst, but it was still playing!

my 10 gig 3g survived no less that FOUR car accidents....I'm a bad driver. After the worst accident, where I completely cleaved the front of my car in two, the screen went fuzzy and was never the same again, but it was still usable!! sadly it was replaced with a 5.5g this christmas, but I'll always remember it fondly.

Last month on vacation in Chicago (yeah i know vacation in Chicago... in the winter!) anyway at the hotel i ran on the treadmill. I had forgotten my good earbuds and used some others. the cord length was different. Set it on the front of treadmill to watch video while running. after about 30 seconds i hit the cord with my swinging hand (never do that with my normal Shure earphones) and it fell to the treadmill floor and was flung into the wall behind the treadmill. still worked. whew. did this 2 more times before i decided that it was best not to watch movies that particular day

My old mini was dropped several times, and it fell in a street gutter filled with water. Still works pretty well, considering what it went through. So far, my 80 GB iPod has avoided any mishaps.

My iPod nano has survived multiple trips to concrete, and it's still nearly perfect because of the protective overlay that was on it.

I have the winning iPod survival story here though! At the fair, my iPod flew out of the ride and hit the steel below.
It fell out of my pocket on this ride while I was upside down.

Just a half inch skuff/gash on my upper left part of the screen. My iPod has no broken LCD, and the hard drive is still working perfectly, and there are no other scratches on it. WTF? is all I had to say.

my ipod hasn't been through much; i dropped it in the snow, made a scuff at the bottom.

My friend's black ipod video 30GB however, is a different story. he completely wrecked it, lol, it's scratched everywhere, and he holds it by the earphone cord. he doesn't even watch videos on it. ha, my kind of guy

my original iPod sat at the bottom of a cooler (full of melted ice aka like 35 degree water) for 2 minutes. i didnt use it for 3 days strait and it ended up working fine. i finally had to replace it because of bad battery life Not because of wear and tear.

To bring up this old thread, might as well say this.

uhm, lets see... My iPod goes everywhere with me (I work for an Internet Service Provider installing wireless DSL) and i was on top of a roof and it fell out of my pocket and slid down the roof, the gutter of the persons house stopped it before it fell 30 feet, and its still working fine. Ive also slipped on ice with it, dropped it 5 times, and, its survived kicks from being in the middle of a game of DDR after it fell on the metal stage that you stand on. But until it dies, I am going to keep on taking it everywhere i go :) That thing is my companioin, and my friend in my times of need.

One time i was taking me nano out of its ihome station and i dropped it. My instant reaction was OH MY GOD cause i thought it was going to hit the floor. Well it kinda did. It fell sorta slanted and landed half on half off on my xbox then hit the floor. I thought i was gonna die. I instanlly picked it up NO SCRATCHES NO NOTHING. I was so happy. My 3genn fell one like 1 ft to the floor where it landed on carpet. About half a year later it died now im looking for anouther 3gen. But other than those instances nothing else happned.

My 3rd Gen vintage iPod from 2003 survived many many falls until 2 weeks ago.

The HD was spinning when I dropped it on the hard brick floors of the subway station. Now, songs skip, it "pops" like old records, and sometimes it skips a whole playlist.

RIP. 2003-2007

i was on the treadmill one time and i dropped my ipod nano with no case onto it the treadmill where my foot landed on it and shot the nano back where it hit a filing cabinet and came to a rest. i got off the treadmill picked it up plugged my headphones back in and continued my workout. without skipping a beat my nano is still fully functional and works just fine.

My old mini fell sometimes. My sisters 1gb white shuffle has been dropped and lost a lot but she always finds it. I've dropped my nano and my old nano a lot but nothing bad happens.

My 5G fell when I took it out of its case to clean it. It fell into the side of the sink, and slid down, along the bottom, and up the other side, all with its screen side down. My reaction was "HOLY SHI-NOOOOOOO" and I grabbed it when it got to the other side.

End result: NO SCRATCHES.

And yet, it can't survive a week in its case without getting a new scratch. I need a new case.

I was snowboarding a few years back. I had my 3g 40gb ipod inside my jacket by my rib cage. Make a long story short, I messed up a trick and fell hard. I had an imprint of the ipod on my rib cage for a few weeks nice black and blue with some green. It hurt like hell but hte ipod worked and still works till today.

My nano fell a few times, but i have it in a case so i'm not too worrried.

My first iPod was dropped 20 feet (I was on my cousins balcony and my headphone cord snagged on a chair and the iPod came out of my pocket sat on the edge of the balcony for what seemed like an eternity and fell) and the Hold button was permanently stuck on. Thank god Apple sent me refurbished iPod.

Now onto the replacement, about 8 months after my first incident, my iPod gets the idea to have a bath. I got mud stains all over my pants and my mom put them in the sink to soak. Turns out the iPod sat in a sink-full of water all night.

I started to panic and tried to turn it on...nothing. So I put the little guy in a container of rice, 3 days later I hook it up to my computer and it came back to life. I told myself that I would be careful with it from now on.

So this morning I wake up and go to get some PJ pants out of the dryer, and whats sitting atop of all the clothes? Why my iPod of course. I always search my pockets before I do a load of laundry and I never felt it. Turns out it fell through a hole in my pocket. So it went through the washer and the dryer.

I tried to turn it on and nothing. So, not wanting to put up with the rice trick again I decide to plug it into my computer, alas, it turned on. So a few close scares and a new name, "Tank." I think it's a pretty suitable name.

my 30GB fell out of my pocket during a kegstand and hit the keg handle thingy.
i've fallen on it more times that i can remember learning how to snowboard.

then the most interesting one.
when i broke up with my ex, my 30GB was at her house, and she decided to give it back to me all shooting it through my bedroom window. (she used one of those bigass three person waterballoon slingshots.

My first 5th gen survived multiple falls and once my friend and I (both with 5th gen ipods) were about a 25 minute walk from her house when it started to pour.
We were completely soaking wet and naturally, so were our iPods.
It always worked perfectly.
Unfortunately it could not survive being stolen.

I dropped my 30GB video on the corner where the hold button is, on concrete too. Good thing it survived.

Luckily none of mine have had to put up with too much. The closest I've came to disaster was when I dropped my 5G out of my hand whilst walking along a concrete path, but luckily I managed to react quickly and stick my foot under it, thus causing the soft leather to take the main impact of the fall before it skittered onto the ground.

I dropped the 2G nano onto cement while running to catch the bus. Three sides got shaved considerably, and now have the rough feel of tarnished aluminum. Beyond that, though, the thing works perfectly, was nothing more than just cosmetic damage.
