How to transfer itunes and library to external hard drive

I just bought an external hard drive and I would like to be able to use it as storage for my music, photos and movies or tv shows. I still want to download to my hard drive to ensure I don't get a virus - so I can use anti-virus on all downloads before I transfter to the external hard drive. I need a set of instructions so I don't loose my library of music, video, and tv shows.

Please walk me thru this so I don't make a mistake and loose all my stuff. I use a pc
and itunes. I do also have stuff on my windows media center - not everything was switched over to itunes (music anyway)

I am a newbie and appreciate your help.
