My iPod Photo went on the blink about 2 months ago. All I would get was the sad face with the battery. Resetting it didn't help and I couldn't reformat it on either Mac or PC. I figured it was dead, thought maybe I'd go to an Apple store and let a genius look at it, then I'd replace the hard drive myself.

Like many other Americans, I purchased the US State Quarters Map some years back. You know, the one where you push the new state quarters into the holes for each state. So today I was adding North Dakota and the quarter would not go all the way in. I needed something to bang it into place, and the only handy item was my dead iPod Photo. After the 4th (and last) bang on the quarter with the iPod, the iPod sprang to life and functioned fine. It still had half a charge and all my music on it. When I plugged it in it mounted right up and worked fine in iTunes. Go figure.

So remember boys and girls, if all else fails, bang your iPod a few times, it might work...

I had thought that the "iPod slap" repair was all to do with the hard drive, but it's actually to do with the connector. A less radical, less 'kill or cure" method is to open the iPod and push the HDD connector plug fully home.

Once you've got the covers off, probe for it with your middle finger, and when you find the sweet spot, push really gently until it pops home.

that's exactly what happened to me actually. I had a dead 4g monochrome, i could hear the HDD trying to load, and i smacked it against my bookshelf a couple times, and it worked for a extra week before it finally died

This was happening to me last week, my 30G iPod Photo kept jsut shutting down in mid song

After a few smacks and then failing again, I just opened it up and pushed the connector all the way in.

no problems since

Good one baggssy.

If it's not too much trouble, can I see a photo of that map?
