First of all, please forgive me for the pun...
My first set of "high end" earphones was a set of Shure E2C's. I loved the comfort and the sound isolation but they did lack in the bass department. (Don't give me the "you didn't take time to fit them" schpeal because I used them for almost a year and tried every rubber thingy in the fit kit) Finally my dog chewed them up. Argh...
Anyway... I finally replaced them after dealing with a pair of cheap Skullcandy Smokin' Buds for a couple of months. I had every intention of getting another set of E2C's but I didn't in the end. Best Buy had the Bose Triport IE's and the salesperson was raving about the bass. Same price as the Shures so I bought them. I REALLY liked them at first. The sound was great and when I was walking the dog or driving I actually liked the fact that they didn't block out the entire world like the E2C's. The case sucked and they weren't as comfy as the Shures but I could deal with that.
Then after a couple of weeks of ownership something in the right earbud went bad. At first I thought that myself and Lady Sovereign had blown it. But further review showed that it wasn't blown. Something was just loose in it. It was terribly annoying. So I contacted Bose since I had already registered the warentee card. They wouldn't do anything since I hadn't owned them for more than 30 days and kept telling me to take them back to Best Buy. Best Buy is an hour and a half away. But left with no choice I took a day off work (I'm self employed) and drove to Best Buy. I got lucky and the girl at the return counter really seemed to know her stuff. No questions asked on the return after I told them about Bose refusing me. It wasn't the first time and she was more than a bit annoyed.
The nice lady came around the counter and walked over the earbuds section with me. She said that the Shures fit a lot better and reccomended them unless I was set on getting another set of Triports. I told her about the lack of Bass in my old E2C's and she said she used E3C's and they were much better in the bass department. Normally I don't believe these sales pitches but she happened to have them in her pocket and had a brand new 80g iPod on her hip. So I took the bit paid $60 difference (They were $179 versus the $99 for the Bose but I had some Best Buy credit) and was on my way.
The E3C's are MUCH better than anything else I've had. Very comfortable, more clear than the E2C or the Triports and the Bass is acceptable (although the Triports still had more). Bose really blew it with this though. I'm a pretty rabid iPod evangelist and if they just would have let me mail them back for replacement, I'd still have them in my ears and be raving about them to my friends.
