So I finally decided to make the move to the e500's after giving it some thought. I do have one question, however, to be answered before they arrive at my door. What have you found the optimal encoding setting to be in iTunes (those of you who use canals)? Also, should I consider using WAV or another lossless setting?

Either lossless or 320 kps AAC/MP3

160kbps AAC.
You won't know the difference.
Especially with the Shure e500 which are all mids have practically no trebles.

Huh? I found the E500 to be revealing of bit rate. That being said maybe the OP should just test out a bunch of codecs and see which is the best size/quality ratio.

seconded. i think you'd seriously hear flaws if using a bitrate lower than 320
but as macromedia said, go for trial + error; see what's best for you.

Thanks for the responses all. I think I'll redo a couple of favorite songs and test them out.

typobox,
try going down all the way to AAC 160kbps (and if you feel adventurous even 128kbps), and do a blind listening test and tell us if you can tell the difference.
The AAC encoder in iTunes is not the tinker toy that is MP3.
