Hey all.
With Metallica's new album coming out in a few weeks here, I was wondering who is considering picking it up. I just dropped into the website and took a look at the St. Anger video. It seems that Lars and crew have just made an angry thrash album. Has anyone heard other stuff that might make the disc worth getting?

And for those who have seen the video, what do you make of the dedication at the end... "the spirit of those incarcerated at San Quinton will forever be part of Metallica"... I wonder if any of the people there swapped Metallica MP3s?

You can bet your MetalliA** that I'll be picking it up on release date. I have heard that they made a very heavy album. I need to head on over to the site now and check out the video.

Did you know the CD also comes with a DVD with the boys playing every single song from the CD? Absolutely cool!

Alas, I cannot see the video because I'm on a Mac and I can't plays Windows Media Player videos and refuse to install RealPlayer. Bummer. I'm sure I'll see it sometime.

I'm on a Mac (OS10.2.6) and play Windows Media all the time. just seems they've coded the links a bit weird. hmm...

if you use IE, just right-click (ctrl-click) the link and save the target URL. thten go to media player and open URL, paste it in.

I'd recommend buying Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief" on June 10th instead of Metallica's new garbage.

Send me the money and I'll buy it in addition to St. Anger. Otherwise, I'll take Metallica anyday. To each his own.

If you are on OS X, a good way to view WMP media is to download VLC player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). RealOne for OS X isn't too bad either.

I did end up downloading and installing RealOne Player. Thanks.

For those of you that are interested, Metallica has moved up the release date for St. Anger. It will now be in stores this Thursday, June 5th. I guess a lot of bootlegs were getting out and they wanted the real thing out there as soon as possible.

Well said. But I suppose if they hadn't done it, someone else would have. I must say though, that Metallica is looking a bit hypocritical to me. At the end of their new video, they have the following statement:

"For all the souls impacted by San Quentin, your spirit will forever be a part of Metallica"

Oh, those poor murderers, rapists, thieves and what have you. It's a shame they're in such a terrible place. But those #### music stealers, they should be castrated. ;)

Rock on! Metalli-Cops was hilarious. I hadn't seen that one before. Anyway, I'm still buying "St. Anger" on Thursday because I love their music!

From:
http://news.com.com/2100-1027_3-1012785.html?tag=fd_top

The longtime opponents of Internet piracy, who sued file-swapping network Napster in federal court, are promoting downloads of their songs via Metallicavault.com, a Web site set to launch Thursday.

But the site will be free only to people who buy the band's upcoming album, "St. Anger," scheduled for release the same day. The CD inset will include a unique code that people can use to access the site's video of live performances and download newly released tracks.

"We've always wanted our fans to experience our music online," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in a statement. "But up until now, the existing distribution methods have not passed the kind of 'quality' standards our fans have come to expect from us."
###

So it was the quality of the files being swapped that ####ed Metallica off, not the sharing... but the concert bootlegs that they allow are of sufficient quality?

Not meaning to bash the guys at all, S&M is one of my favorite all time albums, but it's just strange to hear this coming from them.

Only a few more days left though until it gets out and then ripped to the pod.

Well I saw the video this morning on MTV and I made sure I paid attention to this statement they made. I think you were a little mistaken by the meaning of their statement. What they mean by this, I believe, is they are referring to the families, friends, and victims of whatever these inmates did. I don't think that they were referring to the inmates, cause if they were then Metallica would have a whole other set of issues to deal with then the whole Napster thing.;)

Actually, no Timmy, you're wrong: Metallica are referring to a video shoot (http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/news/050103_nw_metallica_concert.html) they did at the prison for "St. Anger." And while I think Metallica might not be the best people to do it, given their already-mentioned contradictory position on crime (violent criminals deserve compassion, but Napster-using swappers don't). They've donated money to the San Quentin basketball team. Metallica's stated interpretation of the song is that it's about the right and wrong ways to express anger, which is connected, obviously, to violent crime.
Johnny Cash did a whole bunch of prison gigs in the early part of his career - one at San Qurentin, at which gig country singer Merle Haggerd was in attendance- as an inmate. It was Cash's performance that inspired Haggerd to pursue country music after he got out of jail.
I don't think there's anything wrong with taking compassion on inmates, regardless of their crimes. Genuine compassion doesn't ignore or excuse thier crimes, but it does understand that they are still human beings with the potential to change. Cash knew that, because it was music that changed his life - before being a musician, he was into a lot of heavy stuff- drinking, drugs, etc. It was his music, and his joining up with the Carter family (the singing group of which his wife, June, was a part) that helped him reform. Unlike a lot of music stars, Cash has always maintained a connection with his past, and has used his fame as a platform to help bring comfort and perhaps healing to people in his former position.

So I think it's great that Metallica is doing prison work; I just hope they're not just using San Quentin as a publicity stunt.

Thank you for clearing that up John. I knew they were talking about the video, but I also thought that if they were referring to the inmates, it wasn't in the way you explained. You know what i'm saying? Anyways, I hope this is the reason they are doing it cause music too is a huge part of my life. It's changed me in so many ways and has helped me through alot of difficult situations and times. Without music, I don't know how this world would be.

Now that I've read their statement again, I can only say that it's written vaguely enough that different people can interpret it in different ways.

I did buy the CD and am listening to it right now. I love Metallica but I'm not too sure I like this new direction. No lead guitar solos (I think Kirk was on vacation), Lars choice of drums is a big mistake (in my opinion) and it's an absolutely abysmal recording (not the usual high quality standard I expect from Metallica). I can't really crank it up without it just grating my ears.

In this case, yes. Metallica has always set the standard for quality recordings by a heavy metal band. This is nowhere close to the standards achieved on their previous recordings.

I just had a listen to it at the bookstore here and I agree, it's grating and really hard to listen to. It would take effort for this to grow on me. I think that this is going to be a pass. I'll be picking up Live: Birds of Pray instead later this afternoon.

It's about time Metallica went back to its roots. This CD is excellent. The audio quality is not bad, its just raw like some of their original recordings are. Some Kind of Monster is great, and the title track has an awesome chorus.

I hardly consider this a divergence from the real Metallica, rather Metallica striving to rediscover the attitude that drove albums like Kill 'em All.

Excellent dude, excellent.

Now that I've listened to the CD a few more times, some of the songs are starting to grow on me. I also like Some Kind of Monster, as well as My World and Shoot Me Again.

But I still disagree about the audio quality. It's the worst they've ever done in that respect. Kill 'em All is miles better in that department. Actually, the DVD audio quality and performance on St. Anger is way better. I wish that was the CD.

BTW, love your sig. The Big Lebowski is my absolute favorite comedy. I can watch that again and again and still get a good laugh.

I just listened to the album and the quality of the recording seemed a little non-metallica like, comparing to previous work i.e. the black album, load, and justice for all.

Well I'm listening to the album right now, and the audio quality isn't GREAT, but its not that bad. But I would like to say that after listening to St Anger on the radio 5.6 million times, the unedited sounds better...

I hate to say it, but I agree. Lars' drums are just annoying. That hollow sound (his snare) doesnt work for me.

I find it odd that they do promote downloading and burning of their music now. I guess they just wanted it done on their terms. Fair enough I suppose.

St. Anger is poop. The drums sound horrible and James can rock but he can't sing.

"St. Anger" is Metallica following rather than leading. They have melded in with the NuMetal pack and are indistinguishable from bands that weren't even born when Metallica started recording.

after hearing it a dozen times, ive concluded its garbage.

the lyrics are repetitive... about death, hurt... etc. The self-titled single is the most annoying crap to listen to. Lars grew his hair back and he cant see or something, he sounds like someone is holding a gun to his head while he drums.

They tried to do what Mike Jackson did, and make another thriller, in this case it was the black album.
