Guidelines to voting:-

There is no video-editing to be done.
there are no games to be played (other than really really really cheap arcade style)

Maximum Multi-tasking that will happen is the following:-
Internet surfing (2/3 windows) + Cd's ripping + mp3 playing + office for mac running (with a medium sized spreadsheet/document) + a couple of online chat programs (MSN/Yahoo/ICQ etc).

THAT IS THE MAXIMUM. (will probably happen for abt 25 mins on a rainy Tuesday twice in a yr) ;)

So the question is, what is the best RAM to get it (bear in mind that money IS AN object...:-))

128MB
256MB
384MB
640MB

I don't know how many ram-sockets there is in an iBook, but you can always buy more ram later (if the sockets isn't full).

But you should ATLEAST start with 256 mb...

I have 256k and it works great, but I only use my iBook for surfing the internet, I have a wireless connection. On my iMac where I have everything, I have a GIG. And it works fine.

as far as i know, the ibook has two ram sockets. a pre installed 128 and a upgradeable one (up to 512mb). so as a maximum you get 640mb.

i just checked on apple.com. the price difference between 256mb ram for an ibook and 384mb is just $50. so my advice is for you to get 384mb. you ought to be fine with 256mb, but 384 gives you "future-proof". you?ll be safe with your ibook for any new needs, you may have in the future.

p.s. you sure about getting an ibook and not the 12'' powerbook? :D

The maximum RAM is 640... 128 MB comes soldered to the mobo, and you can add a $110 dollar 512 stick to it. Mine came with 128 MB, and once I booted into X, 128 was in no way enough.

Even if money is an object, memory is cheap at the moment and max-loading to 640 MB has to be the best bet.

it seems money is very much an object (as for most of us :( ). the price for loading up the ibook with 640mb ram compared to the standard 128mb is + $200. that?s quite a foot snag. maybe getting 384mb is the best of both worlds, especially for his needs?!

I went for 384mb in my ibook and I've not noticed any lack of performance. I use it in much the same way as you're intending too, and the only thing that maybe wants more ram is iPhoto. That seems to take a bit to get started up, but once it's running it seems fine.

My mate who's got the same ibook but only 128mb doesn't complain about lack of ram, so maybe it's not too much bother with light use.:)

With the tumbling prices of iBooks, they're rapidly becoming an iPod accessory.

With the number of new users discovering the joys of the iBook, it's perhaps fair enough to have a non-flaming sensible discussion like this in 'General' rather than 'Mac' since the points raised may be of interest to those whose main computer is not a Mac.

that is indeed a good point

i want an iBook too!!!

Just reminding everyone that i'll swap my macally iShock gamepad worth $28 for ?20 or someone's iBook/powerbook (preferably the latter!)

Ok, it's a great deal everyone!!!

btw, my sis has insurance so that if she breaks something by accident, the insurance will cover it, so if you have an old ibook that is broken, send it over and maybe i'll just scam my way to applehood!

haha joke only!

Since the iBooks still use the G3 processor, and Mac OS X is best under a G4, you should have as much RAM as possible. RAM is cheap now, so buy if you can. I think 640MB is a good standard amount. You probably won't need more unless you're some crazy video dude or photoshop dude ...

Thats true, for me photoshop and illustrators eats up memory...the more documents you have open, the more it uses...and trust me, I have used up close to 700 mb with barely a few documents of Illustrator and photoshop open...

640 MB

128 internal, fixed, and 512 in the second slot.
