I recently got a 2G 8GB iPod nano and I am having a problem updating it after it is initially plugged it. What I mean is when I first plug in my iPod; I get all my music updates no problem. But then if I change a preference (add photos) or just right click on my iPod and say “sync” I have to wait a long time (iTunes hangs) and then I get an error 50.

Any help would be appreciated.

Using Windows XP Professional SP2
iTunes 7.0.1.8

Welcome to iLounge.

Can you transfer any of your songs over? Or does it hang also once you open iTunes? Set iTunes to manual and not automatic sync. Then try adding just one song to the iPod and see if it transfers successfully.

Some users said that replacing the cable helps. Do you have another iPod USB cable that you can use?

I am able transfer songs over, but only when I unplug/plug the cable. I have also tested my nano with my wife’s 1G 1GB nano cable and I have the same problem.

Unfortunately I cannot set my iPod to manually sync, as that is a function that is completed after the initial sync of connecting the cable. When I click the manually sync option iTunes sits there for a while and eventually I get the Error -50 code.

Does your wife have a USB cable for her iPod? Try using that other one...could be a bad cable.
