What can I do to replace this?

Would I need another mainboard?

And if so where could I find out how to do it (if it's worth my trouble)?

Can anyone lead me in the right direction?

Welcome to iLounge.

Yes, you will need to replace the mainboard or know someone with very, I mean VERY, fine soldering skills. Not even 100% sure if it can be soldered back.

Replacing the mainboard is not very complicated. Opening the case is the difficult part. If you have one of the regular sized iPods (not a mini or nano), it should be a bit "easier" to open. Just get one of the iPod safe open tools so it doesn't scratch your iPod. You will need to work your way around the iPod edges to open up the latches on the sides.

Thank you very much!

I actually already had it popped open, I honestly just used a knife (physical condition means little to me after the abuse that thing has taken).

Would you know anything further about how to actually put one in? Is it some kind of simple clip it in type deal, or some serious magnifying glass and tweezer kind of work that's not worth doing?

No, it takes fixe tiny screws, which could be screwed back in with a pocket knife

but however, when you are taking all of the cables out of the mainboard, remember, that the cables for the iPOd are EXTREMELY Fragile. I mean, if you accidentally fold or even touch it with a sharp pbject, t will not work. at all

I know, it has caused me ALOT of pain in the past

Which model of the iPod do you have? Most users still have the 4G models, so if that's the one you have, there will be 6 torx screws (use a T-6 screwdriver will do the trick). Loosen them all and the board should be loose. One of the screws might be hidden under the hard drive connector's tape...so keep an eye for it. Before taking out the whole motherboard, use your fingernail to pop UP the two notches you see there connecting to the LCD and the battery. Then take out the connectors and remove the motherboard. Replace it...

If you have another model and have problems opening that one, feel free to ask and let us know which one that is.

Thanks for all the help everyone, but here's a question:

What is to be done with this gold wire? It's connected to the motherboard, and that needs to come out. Does this detach?

I'm not 100% sure with a 3G, but on a 4G, it can be popped off very easily from the logic board. If it looks like it's soldered, stop. If it's not, you can take it off with a little pull.

Nothing tricky there. You see the end connected to the motherboard right? Use your nails or something flat and slowly pry it open. Please be very careful that you don't detach the gold cable connector from the black piece connector that it's attached to...this is not the one on the motherboard already, there is another small black piece that fits into the slot. I recommend prying inside the black area where you should see a line...loosen it from there instead of tugging on the gold connector directly.

Basically, same as the 4G :)

This website has some good video tutorials that show how to change the mainboard.
