Hey I want to know what people think of my idea for an aftermarket car stereo that lets you dock the iPod in-dash. (this is for used cars, since FM transmitters suck).

Do you think it's a good idea? Go to Kancept to vote:

That's what I've been asking for.

PATENT IT!

I've been hoping something like this would come along for quite awhile.

It did finally come to fruition though from Mitsubishi with their iCar Play Edition. The head unit doesn't have an ipod slot, but there is one just below it in the dash for an iPod Nano.

The only change I would make is the fact that the iPod is visible. For security I would have the iPod fulled pulled into the head unit so it can't be seen. This is one of the reasons after market headunits like the Alpine CDA-9857 are such great options. They allow you to put your iPod into the lockable glovebox where it is out of sight, out of mind....

Still a good idea. The only other changes I would make is a remote control to mount on the steering wheel, more features (AM/FM/CD/MP3/radio recording to the iPod). A heads up display would make it perfect. The only drawback to my Alpine is that I have to look down, away from traffic to use it. That poses a hazard....

So I am guessing this Mitsubishi head is only available in Japan and only if it comes from factory?

You are correct. Though Mitsubishi is considering importing the i-car to the US to compete with the Smart.

Also, upon further review, the i-Car's dock isn't actually part of the head unit. It is an add on that is placed lower in the dash.

I wonder if the 2G nano would fit. I like your design that lets the older iPods fit into the slot and uses a sleave adapter to let newer i-Pods work.
