i've been having problems with my ipod that i recently got and i'm wondering if the ipod is compatible with windows me. if anyone has the answer to this i'd really appreciate it.
The ipod is, but Itunes is not. You'll have to use a different type of software with your ipod...
I'd STRONGLY recommend spending the $80.00 or less and upgrade to XP. It's worth it not only for the ipod, but for all your other applications--just the decreased boot up time alone is worth the price.

Yeah, you're iPod is, but you're computer's not.
Not meaning to be entirely a smart as*, the previous poster is correct in that the upgrade to XP is worth every dime it costs. I floundered around the Windows 98 world for years thinking it was all good. Now I can't believe I ever used that 'OS'.
Make the leap. There is a bit of a learning curve, but you, your computer and your iPod will be much happier.

I do not know what you are talking about. Windows ME is the last good OS from Microsoft. Anyway, I respect your opinion.

Yeah ME sucks but I will answer your question without the remakes on it. Yes you can use the ipod with ME as well as 98se(with some tricks here & there) but Apple thinks that the whole world jumped on the XP bandwagon but most people still 98se and Me with no problems. Itunes is 2000 & XP only program but you can use Musicmatch(I would not use it), Xplay, Ephpod, MC9, & a list of others programs that will work with your OS so don't upgrade to Xp unless you really want too. If you do, don't just upgrade but get a full install of XP. In the past I had bad install with just the upgrades period. Again you can use your OS with the ipod, you can use other programs(that are free) for music management & transfers, & don't upgrade save that money.
Yes, you can use those third party software programs--but only ephpod is free. It's a good program though. If you're going to pay money for Xplay or MC9, might was well spring the extra dough and get XP. And I respectfully disagree with Mockba--ME is awful compared to XP--I've yet to Blue Screen on XP; it was a VERY common occurrence with ME. I think most (not all, but most) people would pick XP over ME....(Hey--we're not allowed platform wars in here; maybe we can start an OS one instead!!).
If you aren't going to buy a new computer for awhile, I'd get the XP upgrade. If you are, then I'd just use ephpod until you get your next 'puter. Just my 2 cents...

I'm glad to hear you repect the opinions of others, but dude, this is not an opinion. WinME can't hold a candle to XP on any front, especially hardware compatibility and memory management. Comparing the two is like comparing a Mercedes to a Volkswagen.

It took 12 grueling days to make it happen, but I was finally able to get it all to work. Here's how:
1. Get a FireWire card bus if you don't have a FW port (I didn't). I went with Adaptec.
2. My pc didn't have the drivers, but they were on the Windows ME OS disc, so it was just a matter of installing them.
3. MusicMatch won't work. I paid for and downloaded XPlay and it was worth every penny. When downloading my cds, I use MusicMatch to rip them into MP3s, but when transfering the MP3s to my iPod, I use XPlay. Just copy and paste - that simple.
4. For whatever reason, Audible always says my iPod is not connected, even when it is. As long as the music is getting to where it has to go - I'm okay with that.
5. When connecting the iPod to the pc, the only way that works for me is plugging the iPod into the FireWire card BEFORE I plug the FW card into the pc. Only when they go in together does the pc acknowledge the iPod and the E:Drive appears on My Computer.
Hope this helps. Oh, as for XP, I'm sure it's better. But for what I'm doing, ME is really fine. Up until I got the iPod and was struggling, I never really felt I needed to upgrade. And although buying the upgrade version seems easy enough, I've heard too many peeps say it's much better to buy the complete version and install from scratch. Well, that's a lot of $$$ and work for a guy who just uses Word, Microsoft Money, the Internet, and his iPod.

Thanks for that post! I am going to be a proud owner of two ipods, the older generation ones, and I am on WINME so this is just what I needed to hear. Other than where in the darn world can I get the software to reformat the older ipods without a dock connection to windows was a little hard to find. Until I came here of course:p
Again thanks!
