I'm working on a Compaq Evo N1000V notebook with a buit in TI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. My iPod doesn't seem to like this firewire card. Can I install a different card in one of my pc slots? Will it have problems with the exisiting firewire card?

No, it shouldn't have any problems with the existing firewire port.
Just get a good card (Adaptec, OrangeMicro) and if you can, get one with 2 6 pin ports. That way you can connect one port to the iPod and with a 2nd cable you can connect the other port to the iPod's AC adaptor. This will then power your iPod while uploading.
