Hi -
Apologies if a reply to this has been posted already.
I have a new 40GB Ipod and am using it with ITunes and Windows XP and a Firewire card. A friend uploaded their music to my ipod's hard drive so I could download it to my PC and then import into ITunes manually by copying it over into the ITunes directory.
My problems are:
1. The Ipod when connected is not appearing in windows as an external drive, although it appears fine in Itunes.
2. The music on the hard disk section of my ipod is over 30GB - the space available on my PC is 22GB. Once I get my PC to recognise the Ipod as a mounted disk, what's the best way to transfer the data over? Do I need to purchase an external drive and just store all my itunes folders there?
many many thanks!!!

1. You have to enable the ipod for firewire diskmode, or at least an option similiar to that. It should be in the preferences, but I don't use iTunes, so I can't check it.
2. I'm not sure what you can do about this. You certainly can't perform a syncing operation and I'm not sure if iTunes will let you manually transfer songs. I'd save up for an external firewire especially with the cheap prices you are getting now. I paid under $200 for an external 160gb harddrive.

I'll back up Bill here a bit. ;)
1. He's right, iTunes by default disables the iPod from appearing as a drive (stupid feature). In iTunes, click on the iPod icon in the lower right (you need to have your iPod selected to see this icon). This is where you enable disk mode.
2. You don't have to keep your tunes on your PC. Here (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11518) is a thread on how to only keep them on the iPod. But, I agree with Bill. Get a second HDD, because you will need to restore your iPod someday and you'll end up losing all your music if you don't have it backed up.

I did go into itunes (after much ferreting around the apple user guide) and enabled it to act as a hard drive, but still couldn't see it in windows explorer...

OK, check to make sure that the other piece of garbage that hides your drive isn't installed:
MMJB iPod Plugin
or iPod Manager
Uninstall both of them.
This is interesting as I have a sort of similar problem (see software re-insatallation problem post) . I've been trying to un-install my iPod software completely butI cant seem to get rid of iPod manager, It says I must remove it from add/remove programs but it doesnt appear there. I'm trying to uninstall it in order to re-install from scratch. Both Music Match and iTunes doesnt communicate with my iPod. Is there anything I could of accidently deleted from my iPod in order for this to happen? I dont think there is so it must be software related surely?

You can prevent iPod Manager from running (it runs automatically as a service in the background) by going into C:\Program Files\iPod and renaming the "bin" folder to "bin_old". Then reboot.

I tried renaming the folder in windows explorer and it says access is denied... I didn't have ipod connected or itunes running when I tried to do this.
Do you think apple plans to fix this at anytime with a software update? Seems insane as they promote this as one of the main uses...

If you have admin rights then turn off and disable the service in the control panel.

Or you can open up Task Manager and end all processes that start with "iPod". Then you should be able to rename it.

I have similar problems...Win XP Pro.. I installed iTunes a while back (stooopid idea!) with MusicMatch and have had a barrage of problems since then.
Problems:
iPod is not recognized in Windows
Tries:
I uninstalled iTunes, MusicMatch, uninstalled my IEEE1394 card and reinstalled the hardware and iPod for Windows.
In iPod for windows, the setup program completes (almost) and there is one procvess that hangs (IDriver.exe), I killed the process and reboot.
- I see the iPod icon with a red 'x' mark and iPodService is running.
- I also see 2 (two) instances of iPod for windows in add/remove programs listing
- I cannot uninstall either of those 2 instances, neither can I uninstall any of the other iPod programs (Updater, Manual etc)
I have also tried booting windows in safe mode and uninstall, but it would still not uninstall. I have tried removing the iPod windows services from the startup list and no luck either. I have no idea what to do next, please help!!!

I had the same problems as you guys before. My windows xp did not recognized ipod and music match was too slow. I run the software came with the ipod to registered it to my computer, and I downloaded the iTunes, it copied music a lot faster. So my iTunes recognized the iPod and copied the music quickly to its library. But my problem is, it doesn't copy music to the i
pod. I have an Apple computer and I have no problem with the ipod.

In your iPod, the music stores in an invisible folder called iPod_control. You need to make this file visible and then drag the files to your computer. It will cost roughly $10 to by the utility for this job. Have a look WWW.ugcs.caltech.edu/~dazuma/filetyper and some of thes free utilities for Mac but my knowlege is base on a year old book, so look in their web sites and ask if they have a new version for windows.
