Cigarette lighter jacked - repair options?

I'd like to power my iPod through my cigarette lighter, but I damaged it a while ago powering one of those electric air pumps. The fuse is fine, but the lighter has never worked since. Anyone know what it would take to diagnose and fix the problem? I imagine it would be costly because it might involve taking down the dashboard? The only reason I would get this fixed would be so I can power the iPod on long trips, which I don't need to take very often, so it might not be worth the expense.

You'd have to get in behind the lighter to fix it anyway so why not get back there and just hardwire a line for your iPod? And throw in a 2a fuse and a switch if your lighter is not on a switched circuit while you're there.
