iTunes and videos

I apologize if this has been covered before (Im sure it has but I cannot find it), but I just got a new 5g 30g iPod w/ video. I am aware video files require some sort of conversion to be compatible with the iPod, but I cannot even reach that step. iTunes will not let me add video files. (yes I have the newest version). When I attempt to add a .mpg file to my iTunes library, I select the file and nothing happens. I receive no error message yet the files does not appear in my library. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You have to convert the files to MP4 or M4V for iTunes to accept them. read the stickies at the top of this forum to see what programs will do this for you.
