I have a brand new iPod and I tried to install a firewire card (Belkin) to my IBM thinkpad laptop. I have Windows XP and it claims in the device manager that the firewire is working properly. When I plug in my iPod, it doesn't acknowledge that the iPod is connected. The same problem happens on an HP pavillion laptop as well. However, I know the iPod does work, as I have tried it on another computer with a built in firewire. I don't what the problem is. What do I do?

Try putting the iPod into forced firewire mode. Do a reset (menu + pause/play until the Apple logo comes up) then, at the Apple logo, press the FF and REW buttons until it says OK to Disconnect.
Then connect the iPod and see if you can run the Updater (Start>Programs>iPod>System Software). You'll want to click on Restore.

Putting the iPod into forced firewire mode doesn't work because the computer doesn't even acknowledge that the iPod is connected. The iPod works properly, but I cannot get my computer to recognize it's connected. I'm using a Belkin firewire card, which is supposed to work, but it doesn't seem to. I even tried the Belkin on another laptop with Windows XP and it didn't work there either. What's going on?

In my experience the Belkin cards generally work fine, but they are not always perfect.
Don't know what to tell you at this point but to try another card, and Adaptec brand would be my recommendation. Just make sure you can return it.
