Well, with all the recent events, I have sort of been wondering about bringing electronics on planes. I'm goign to be goign to Costa Rica Tuesday for my half sister's wedding from the Miniapolis International Airport. The TSA says that there are no bans on electronic devices over at http://tsa-7.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/tsa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=254&p_created=1155227254&p_sid=cbldKOei&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfc m93X2NudD0xNiZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y 9JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1 . But, I'm sort of worried about when I leave Costa Rica. I was planing on calling the airport on Monday and seeing what they had to say, but, do you guys think its a risk, or should I just not worry about it? I'm sort of worried about having to put it in my luggage and then having it stolen or broken while leaving Costa Rica.

Just curiouse, but what do you guys think? If I call the airport and they say I should have no problems bringing electronic carry on's when leaving Costa Rica, should I just take their word for it?

You cannot bring ANY electronics on flights now in/out of the UK or the US due to new restrictions. I'm not sure about other countries, but so far the UK and the US are the only ones to my knowledge. You can't even bring carryons except for you wallet and something else I can't remember. You need to put all your stuff in a small plastic bag (as far as the US goes) and all of your carryons go in your luggage.

Don't you mean To/From the US/UK? The TSA page I linked to was last updated last night.

Canada now doing was the UK is doing though? bleh :S

EDIT: Oh...I did read tht there was one or two states that had an electronics ban on air planes as of a couple days ago...but, it's not a nation wide thing in the US.

There's one thing I don't get. Why ban books? Sure you could hit some one with it but then agian, fist would do more damage...

I was reading the comments from the the Ipod Bomb article or one of those on ilounge and someone said tht someone could soak the book in the explosive, then detonate it somehow?

I think they are just over spooked...you realy can't blame them.

EDIT: The thing with that though...you could also soak your clothes....i don't know :S

I'm going to petition the TSA to ban fists......and knees......and feet. I guess I'll get them to ban passengers all together.

I don't know, but I would venture a guess. My friend had a brother who regularly would carry razorblades (boxcutters), threatening younger kids. When they continually got confiscated, he would slip the small ones in an opening he made in the jackets of the bigger, older books in their house.

Something liek that would be detected with the metal dectector or seen with the X ray though..woudlen't it?

Makes sense. Just pointing out the possibility of hiding something in book jacket.

He would threaten younger kids with box cutters? that's kind of bizarre.

Yes, he had issues. Couldn't get along with kids his age, so tried to intimidate the younger ones. Eventually he got sent to juvie detention.

Thomas Friedman on December 26 2001 in the New York Times:

“Think about it, if everybody flew naked, not only would you never have to worry about the passenger next to you carrying box cutters or exploding shoes, but no religious fundamentalists of any stripe would ever be caught dead flying nude.”

S######. That possibility suddenly seems very apt.

Even then a blade couldn't fit inside a paperback book spine. The book would fall apart. It would be suspicious if someone was carrying a big hardcover book with the spine bulging outward. Maybe then the goverment could take away the book. Also if you soaked the book in chemicals that could blow up, the print would be gone/running. You'd also run the risk of blowing the book up if you dropped it...

Yesterday, my mom's friend slipped packets of soy sauce through security because they were in a takeout container. Metal objects, not so much.

Last year when I went to L.A. I had nail clippers (the big plier looking ones) in my carry on and they didn't confiscate it.

For anyoen interested, there are currenlty no restrictions on Electronics at the Miniapolis Airport in St. Paul or the San Jose International Airport in Costa Rica.

Still....I don't think i'm goign to bring anything..i just dont' want to take the chance of somehow not being able to bring them onw ith me and then losing them or having them broken if they suddenly change these policies. :S

Lipsticks, chapsticks, lip balms & stick deodorants that do not contain liquid or gel can be packed in carryon baggage.

Passengers may have-baby formula, breast milk, if a baby or small child is traveling, prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket. insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines.

This is hilarious... are they gonna check for it? hmm... most likely not. Good way to hide a potential bomb though.

'Cuz then u can use that 15LB encyclopedia to hit people on the head with? :D

Alright lets not go berserk here. I'm road warrior so I speak with some authority (or listen to me at your own risk!)

The current total carry-on ban is on UK-US only. And if I have to guess, it's not going to last forever. Remember they baning plastic knives right after 9-11? same thing. Stupid bureacratic reactionaries.

US flights to other destinations, for sure no liquid or gel on carry-ons, but I don't understand women who cry, oh my God, I can't do without my makeup on a 1 hr flight!!! Huts. That's right, u can put all your makeup, shaver what not in the check-in luggage and freshen up when u get there. If u can't do that, STAY HOME. &^$% cry babies!

ELECTRONIC CARRY-ON IS FINE (other than UK-US as mentioned). Don't ask me to explain it, but they are currently not baned.

Heh...you seem to be someoen who knows that they are talking about. Just wondering though, but in your opinion, what are the odds of them suddenly banning electronics everywhere? Would you worrya bout bringing an expesnive device as a caryon for a trip that wil lhappen 3 days from now :-P

The short answer is, I WOULDN'T WORRY. Costa Rica is not exactly a hotbed of ttrrorism.

BUT *if* in the next 2 days there is news that they uncovered a notebook b_o m b in the works, I will bet they will then ban all electronics, at least temporarily. As said stupid bureaucratic reactionaries.

08-13-2006, 03:25 AM
Notebook bomb >_< ....you better be carefull what you say...you'll give them ideas :S

This realy is all sort of rediculouse though....if they thuroglhy check everything and x-ray electronics and have people knwow hat to look for in the electronics that could posibly make them bombs....there isn't much to worry about, is there? The only way we can be trully safe is to not fly at all :S

The world is comming to an end.:shake:

There are no electronic restrictions for domestic flights in the U.S., only U.K. to U.S. as of today these are the rules:

United States

# Travelers boarding commercial flights at a U.S. airport will not be allowed to carry "any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions" onto airliners.

# Passengers on flights from Great Britain are prohibited from carrying electronics on board. There are no such restrictions on people traveling on domestic flights or from the U.S. to Great Britain.

# Beverages purchased beyond security checkpoints must be consumed before boarding -- they will not be permitted aboard the aircraft.

# TSA screeners will recheck every bag at boarding gates for banned items, preventing passengers from carrying items purchased in boarding areas.

# Gate-side inspections are taking place for all passengers on flights to Great Britain. On other flights, the TSA is conducting random gate-side inspections.

# Federal security directors -- the top TSA officials at airports -- have discretion on how to implement the new policy. They can also use any resource available to conduct the inspections, meaning they can use their own screeners, state and local law enforcement personnel or airline personnel.

I bet one could fit an exacto blade in a paperback's spine.

Just kidding.

Imagine if they were to add this to the no-fly list! I think it would put a good deal of the country over the top; we might even see bra-burning again! Anyway, how about that flight today that had to return to the gate because of an open water bottle!!!
