I'm debating on whether to have an Alpine CDA-9857 installed professionally in my Focus ZX-5 or save a few bucks and try it myself. I'd say I'm reasonably mechnaically inclined.

Would the Crutchfield guides & parts be ok for a complete car stereo noob?

It helps, but not to the complete noob. U got a toolbox with files, screwdrivers, drill, soldering itron, and u have used them frequently, I say go for it.

The Focus is a super easy install. You should have no problem. The directions supplied by Crutchfield will be adaquate. The only special tools you will need are Ford Radio Removal tools (might be supplied by Crutchfield or most autoparts stores will carry them, they're cheap)
Other than a set if wire crimpers no other tools are needed for the Focus
