I have an Nforce motherboard with on board Firewire. I connect the ipod to it and windows XP picks it up no problem. I have a drive letter, no problem. I want to use MM or iTunes or the apple update/restore, we have a problem. Xplay works fine, but why should I pay where there is a perfectly good program in iTunes? iTunes and MM with iPod manager, just don't see it. When I try to update or restore, I just get "ipod service error". Whats the deal, I want to restore it so I can have it windows formated and the latest firmware.

At first I thought it was a corrupt windows install, so I reinstalled windows, but that didn't help.

Is there anyone else that uses Nforce with onboard firewire.

hehe, this is actually pretty simple.

The reason Xplay is working is that it can read HFS+ formatted drives (which is what macs use). All, iPods come formatted for Macs as MiPods. Part of the setup process for windows users involves converting the iPod to a WiPod--formatting it to FAT32.

You must not have run the install program. Did you? Check to make sure that under the About screen on the iPod it should say "Format: Windows". If that's not there ("format" doesn't show up at all), then it's still a MiPod.

Run the Updater (Start>Programs>iPod>System Software) and click on the "Restore" button.

I wish it was that easy. I can't get the updater app to reformat (restore) fat32. I did install all the software, after unsucessfully just downloading the 2.1 and restoring. Any other ideas? BTW, I tried ephpod, but my pc spontaneouly rebooted when connecting my ipod until I removed it.

Let's uninstall all iPod related software.

Make sure that MacOpener wasn't installed when you loaded ephpod.

Make sure that the MMJB iPod Plugin uninstalled.

Make sure that "iPod Manager" or "iPod for Windows Software" is uninstalled.

You can leave the System Software 2.1 installed. We need that.

Then run the updater (after a reboot).

See if you can get it to work.

That's a no go. I uninstalled everything, didn't make a difference. I still can't restore/update, it just give me "ipod service error". I bought the usb/firewire cable, it should arrive next week. Xplay will have to do until then. Hopefully I won't have any problems using usb 2.0.

Nice thought, but the letter is E:

Are there any drawbacks to using USB as opposed to firewire? Can I still use it as an external harddrive?

Seems there was no need to us USB as my firewire is fine. I ended up finding this tread, http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14180. All I had to do was move c:\program files\ipod\bin into the updater directory and bingo, works like a charm. Now I can use what ever program I want to. Thank you for your help.
