(See pictures below review)

I got my new iSkin eXo 2 at the end of November 2003 when they were first released. It looks and feels like a nice evolution to the eXo series cases. Originally I had the fantastically protective Marware Sport Convertible Case, but I didn?t like covering up my sexy looking iPod so much. I wanted to show it off. When I saw the original eXo case, I liked that it added style, protection, and color to the iPod while letting the iPod show through. The new iSkin eXo 2 does it better than the original eXo in several key areas:

FUNCTIONALTY
- iSkin eXo 2 has a bottom flap access cover for the iPod?s firewire port to prevent dust, dirt and damage, while the orig. eXo does not.

- iSkin eXo 2 has beveled button access for the the front buttons making it easier to push buttons, while orig eXo does not.

- iSkin eXo 2 has a slightly larger beveled opening to access the hold button, while the orig eXo's access hole makes it hard to access the hold button.

- iSkin eXo?s new screen protector is clearer and doesn't stick to the iPod screen making smucker marks like the orig. eXo iShade screen protector.

- The new iSkin eXo 2 belt clip locks in place to the connecting disk on the iSkin eXo 2 case and stays solidly in place until unlocked.

- The new iSkin eXo 2 comes with a clear plastic case to hold the iPod with the case on it. The original eXo has this too.

VERSATILITY
- iSkin eXo 2 comes with a lower profile brushed metal belt clip that solidly hugs the iPod and is studier than the orig. eXo plastic belt clip. The new premium sleek brushed stainless steel metal belt clip can be oriented so that your iPod is sideways or straight up when clipped on. The new eXo 2 belt clip can be used for jogging, while the orig. eXo belt clip would let the iPod flop around too much for a good run. The back of the iSkin eXo 2 belt clip disk that is against the metal iPod surface has an excellent thin padded backing so that it can?t scratch the iPod. Nice touch!

- iSkin eXo 2 comes with a nicely made grey swivel hand strap that hooks onto the metal belt clip. The original eXo had a side silicone loop hole, but the manufacturer cautioned the silicone loop might not be strong enough to use a third party hand strap with it.

LOOKS
- I love the iSkin eXo 2?s sleek curved raised edge that circles around the scroll wheel and runs around to the back (echoes a race car styling look).

- The big iSkin logo is no longer on the front bottom right as on the original eXo, but has now been moved to the back where it belongs. However, the new eXo 2 screen protector has a small iSkin logo on the upper left. Thankfully it is small and doesn?t really cover up anything important.

- The new iSkin eXo 2 screen protector is clearer than the original soft plastic iShade and the view to the iPod display is better. In the iSkin eXo 2, the opening for the eXo 2 display is just ever so wider to allow easier angled viewing to the screen. And the screen protector fits perfectly under the inside beveled edge of the iSkin eXo 2's display opening and stays in place.

- The iSkin eXo 2 gray swivel hand strap is?well?handy, and it looks great with the iPod. The orig. eXo doesn?t feature a hand strap.

- The new iSkin eXo 2 brushed metal belt clip doesn't add much to the overall thickness and it looks and feels like a quality piece of hardware. It also fits in well with the brushed metal look of the iPod.

CONCLUSION
The new eXo 2 case seems like an nice step up from the original eXo cases. Most features in the design have been fine tuned to make this a better looking, better engineered, and more functional case. The sleek and sexy new iSkin eXo 2 case is a winner!

Great review and awesome pics...I am very tempted in getting one for myself now...My iPod is in a leather folio right now. i do like my folio though since that is my main preference, but the iskin's are also a cool alternative if i wanna try something different.

Good review...finally, someone that feels the same way I do about the iskin exo 2!!!

Great review
I just ordered one too.

At first the cons were
- hold button inaccessbile
- logo on screen protectors
- lines around the wheel

However the reviewed cleared up these for me
All the logo blocks is the play/pause and lock icons

Blue will do for now, but I suspect that I will get other colours when they become available :o

I just got my Iskin eXo2 today.. 10 days after I ordered it due to thanksgiving and what not.

So far so good. I was kind of surprised at the thickness of it at first, but i guess I can get used to it.

I really wouldnt recommend getting ebony like I did tho, seems to attract every speck of dust imaginable. You might want to try the grayish one if you absolutely need a dark case, wont show the dirt as much.

The slit at the bottom for the firewire cable is a really nice feature to have. Really easy to connect and whatnot.

I'd give it an 8/10, for the casual user. I took off the 2 for (1) the logo on the iShade thing, and the (2) flimsy feeling belt clip, not that I would ever use it of course. It rattles all the place.

Oh well, good enough for me, but the new Lajo eXo 2 asphalt (i think thats the right color..) is starting to look pretty tempting =)

Well... now that I think about it... maybe i shouldnt get another dark one because of the dust... hmmm...

Woot! Mine shipped already!

Has anyone ordered this in Canada? Do you have to sign for it if it is coming by Canada Post?

I have the Lajo Asphalt eXo and it looks very nice, but the dust specs are always going to show up on the darker silicone sleeves no matter who makes it. That's the trade off for the grippy surface I guess. But hey, who's really going to stare at the dust specs anyway. Enjoy it anyway!

Does your belt clip rattle after you lock it into place? Mine doesn't. Really, if the belt clip metal was a heavier guage I would think it would be considered too thick, heavy and bulky. I feel that the lightweight, but strong metal they used in the belt clip was the right balance between rigidity and portability. The belt clip locking slide locking mechanism on my clip seems durable and tight when it clicks into the locked position. The nice brushed finish shows their attention to detail. Also, the belt clip hugs the iPod so I can even use it jogging. The early eXo version with the plastic clip just flopped around too much when I ran. Just try this for a few weeks and see if you don't feel that it's a step up from the other eXo clips out there right now.

Not usually. You do with things like Fed Ex and UPS.

My guy shipped my Xskn eXo2 Ice today from the US, I should have it by the end of the week around the time my iPod arrives. I got the belkin battery pack today. I only ordered it late Friday night.

It likes to rattle side to side when its locked in place, in the vertical position at least, and in locked position. The padding on the back of the metal circle plate of the belt clip isnt enough in my opinion either. After all the time I spend trying to keep my iPod clean and happy, the last thing i want is a 2" circular scratch on the back.

It's my baby :D

For the pics I used a Canon Poweshot G2 4 megapixel camera. The lighting was abit harsh and washed out from the lights I used. Daytime pics would have looked better. It's a great camera though.:p

Got mine today. Fits well. Only complaint is that the screen protectors is raised a bit and might get knocked out of place. There is also a small black speck inside the plastic. Other than that, and the price it's great! 8.5 / 10.

BTW, i just found out they're like 2 blocks away from my house LOL.

I actually like this screen protector better than the original exo's. It's easier to put in, it offers more physical protection (b/c it's a solid plastic) and you don't have the annoying problem of dealing w/ air bubbles and such when you're trying to put it on.

Well this is my very first case, so I don't have anything to compare it with. However, based on the discussion here, the old screen protectors seem like a pain :o

Are you referring to the iSkin or Xskn when you talk about the new screen protector being better and lack of air bubbles? I thought that the Xskn eXo2 still had a weird protector with bubbles. I'm hoping its ok, my Xskn should be arriving at the end of the week and I want reliable screen protection. I just looked into PDA protectors and there's a box of 12 sheets of plastic for $25 Canadian. And I would have to cut it to the proper size. Expensive.

I'm talking about the iskin exo2. It's actually a piece of hard clear plastic, and the exo has a space to fit the screen protector into it.

That sounds good except I've seen the photos where they have their logo right on the screen. That's really crappy, I would hate that.

It's annoying at first, but you get used to it. I'd rather deal w/ the logo there, than deal with those stupid air bubbles all the time. Now those are REALLY annoying.

If the bubble one is really that bad I would consider the PDA protectors before the thing with the logo on it.

Unless I'm mistaken.. yes it does. At least two different loungers have written up an iskin exo2 review with pictures, and both of them clearly show the logo imprinted in the screen protector.

I wish it were just in the photos only, but even though It's not, I'd rather deal with that then endless air bubbles, and more obvious logo branding on the FRONT of the skin (exo, lajo's exo2.)

I think iskin was on the right path when they moved their logo to the back of the skin... but it would have been best if they left it off the screen protector while they were at it. Either way, it's a small annoyance I'll gladly deal with in order to have a clearer, easier to place, harder plastic screen protector.

renderboy
12-04-2003, 04:32 AM
The new iSkin eXo 2 hard plastic screen protector is way easier to insert into the iSkin with your iPod than the iShades. And no wet smucker marks either on the screen. It stays lined up exactly where it should be, at all times. It doesn't have the annoying refraction effect like the soft rubber iShades around the edges either. The small logo on the iSkin eXo 2 screen protector just barely covers a tiny bit of the play/pause icon, but not all of it. I would rather it wasn't there, but I wouldn't make a big deal of it. It's really not that bad, trust me.

The way the iSkin eXo 2 screen protector fits under the inside silicone case bevel surface of the iSkin eXo 2 case is perfect. And the little plastic nubs or feet on the 4 corners keeps the screen protector flush with the surface of the case perfectly. The day I took the photos for the Min-review posted here I actually dropped a telephone handset on my iPod screen from about 3 feet above it. My heart stopped. All I could barely see was a tiny mark on the screen protector. The hard surface of the screen protector prevented the iPod's LCD from getting the full impact. I'm not sure the softer iShade would have dampened the blow enough to prevent damage to my iPod's LCD. Though, I've not had this accident when I've had my iShade on my iPod.

If you look closely at the new iSkin eXo 2 case you'll see all sorts of design/engineering tweaks that make this case a more refined version of the original eXo. The fit and finish of this new iSkin eXo 2 case is truly a class act to wrap around your iPod!

OK... We all love you Lajo, and everyone will yell at me for saying this, but...

Lajo-- This is excessive and off-topic advertising, IMO. There's no need to post random photos of various colors of your product when the thread is about the *iSkin* eXo 2. What does that have to do with a bubble-gum xSkn eXo 2? A hothouse or LaRouge eXo 1? Nothing! We're talking about the iSkin eXo 2's screen protectors. Sheesh.

It's confusing enough that you're still using the eXo name... Stop making it worse for the readers by going plug-crazy in a thread that's about a different product.

Sorry, guys. I feel kinda like I just said "God sucks" in church ;)

EDIT: It's not just this thread... he's doing this on a bunch of threads.

Wouldn't it just be too easy to ignore then? If he posts in EVERY thread he can, you can't block it out completely. Makes sence doesn't it?

Either that or he has a few employee's sitting there logging into this "Lajo" account every once in a while to post a pic. hah! Wouldn't put it past anyone if they get free advertising.

back to the topic at hand, iSkin exo2

The screen protector.. Is it really that stable in the iSkin? I mean, does it stay put really well?

Anyone gone out jogging with it yet? I still havn't taken up my offer off of iSkin.. I can't make up my mind to spend money just yet, with X-mas comming up. I just bought myself a new iBook, so I have next to no cash. Teehee. :p

(btw, I emailed iSkin to see if they had any other colours for their keyboard protectors, and they emailed me back to say they have a NEW keyboard protector commin out! Anyone know any more on this? I know it's off topic, but if anyone knows more about it plz email me through ipod lounge?)

The screen can move if you press on it and slide it with some force. Otherwise it pretty much stays in place due to the grooves in the skin that it fits under. BTW, when I first heard about the logo on the screen I didn't like it, but after actually using it, it doesn't bother me at all.

It's not actually raised off of the ipod. I think what he was saying, was that it adds a minute amount of thickness to the ipod.

The screen looks great still! I just applied some Ice Creme to get rid of the really bad scratches, and now w/ my new iskin exo2 my screen is crystal clear. The only bad thing about it being this nice, is I'm paranoid to take it out of it's case, just in case it gets scratched again...

The clip seems sturdy enough for regular use. I don't know that I'd go running with it just clipped on my shorts.

You can also use the wrist band as a "safety harness" when wearning the belt clip. For example, run the strap through a belt loop and then over the iPod. I run it through the drawstring on my gym shorts just in case I hit it with something and knock it off.

Does this skin collect a lot of dirt? I recently got my iPod and want to protect it and I really like the looks of this skin. However, I am thinking that the silcone might cause bits of dirt and dust to stick to it easily. I think I'd like to get the white one to maintain the overall white theme of the iPod but I'm worried it may show dirt too much. My second choice would be the blue one and may be my choice if it will show less dirt.

Although this comment comes up quite often, I really don't find the amount of lint, etc. on my iPod to be problematic (dark or light colors). It alittle trade off for the nice comfortable grippy feel. I just brush what little lint has gathered off with my hand. Personally, I use the belt clip or hand strap (iSkin eXo 2) so I don't pocket it much though. As for the debris building up and causing scratching, I don't think this would happen unless you left the iPod in one case for for quite awhile or you were putting your iPod in a less than clean situation regularly.

Consider doing what I do. Get a few different color iSkin eXo 2 cases and swap it out every so often. I give my iPod and case a good cleaning in between changes, and put it safely into the next color. I've even had coworkers ask me if I got a new iPod!?

Now what the Iskin cases need is a mood color case. Changing with the temperature like a mood ring.

I'm wondering if iskin is planning on doing anything similar to Lajo's exo2 w/ the covers for the buttons, and touchwheel. That plus the improvements they've made over the original exo could make their product unbeatable.

Use bounce or any other anti static sheets for your laundry. This works very well and reduces the amoun of dirt, dust and lint on your iskin.

EROS,

Big thanks for the useful info on combating the small amount of lint that the sleeves attract. All the silicone sleeves have this effect, but the grippy feel and cool looks more than offset that for me. I have the Sonic Blue and really don't get much lint at all, but then I don't pocket it without the nice clear case that came with it either.

I know the shipping sounds expensive but theres a good exchange rate at the moment coupled with the fact that it the actual price of the exo 2 is probably way less than it would cost here in the UK.

I ordered an artic exo 2 from iskin.com on Sunday afternoon and it arrived this morning. They marked down the value to $8 without being asked and therefore avoided any customs charges. The total amount taken from my credit card was around 27 pounds. That doesn't sound bad to me, especially when the original iskin exo from everythingipod.co.uk costs around 28 pounds including shipping.

If I were you I would go for it, I reckon it's good value even when you factor in the $16 shipping cost.

Matt.

I'm hoping its ok, my Xskn should be arriving at the end of the week and I want reliable screen protection. I just looked into PDA protectors and there's a box of 12 sheets of plastic for $25 Canadian. And I would have to cut it to the proper size. Expensive.
I picked up this tip on the boards; if you go to a fabric store, they have static cling vinyl that you can buy very cheaply (I got about a yard of it for less than a dollar) that is thicker and works better than PDA protectors, IMO ... just a heads up! :) Since it's so cheap, you won't mind cutting it up, either ... I use it for my cell phone screen, as well; I don't foresee running out of it any time soon!

If you go to www.iskin.com and look in the reseller section UK. I saw three locations in the UK that you can get iSkin products from. Someone on the board said that he ordered from Dr Bott or something in the UK. It appears that the resellers have not yet updated the sites with EXO 2 pics, so if you email them you should get what you are looking for. I don't know about the little pouches though.

If you oder from www.iskin.com I think they might be able to help you with duty. Check the site and email them, they seem to really take care of their customers.

go to "Google" and type in "iSkin exo 2" for a list of sellers, or go to the main iPodlounge page and use their search. Good luck!

Yeah i had alot of these problems as well, i serched google too but it didn't give me anything.

Then i found them:

www.amazon.co.uk

just search for "iskin exo2" (exo and 2 must not have a space between them). They didn't have any pics but seeing as everyone knows what they look like it dosn't matter.

plus they're only ?23.99

Good old amazon:D

Nice spot!!!

Wonder if you still get the free travel bag from Amazon too?

Shame they don't have Sonic Blue in 20Gb :( Might go for an Arctic instead....anyone know if you can see the metal back of the ipod through the skin?

ISNT
12-14-2003, 07:39 PM
Bah...they may be only ?23.99, but they're not direct from Amazon, they come from http://www.everythingipod.co.uk/ so don't qualify for the free delivery. All in, they cost ?29....

I have both the dark grey exo2 and the white frost exo2... I think they are much better than the original exos. The belt clip is a big improvement and the screen protector is alot nicer. The new hold button access is much easier to use as well. However the cover over the dock port has become a little bothersome for me. I use the dock port alot (in my car) and its hard to hold open the cover while trying to plug in my belkin adapter. I just cut it off.. But now I find that the opening itself is just a little too small for the plastic part of the belkin adapter to sit flush with the ipod, so it doesn't stay connected very well. I'm just going to try to cut the opening a little bigger and then it will be perfect.

Also, the free clear case that Lajo supplies (TPU) is of much higher quality than the one that the exo2 comes with . I'll be using my old Lajo clear case with my new iSkin.com exo2...It's much softer and the zipper is easier to zip.

Am i correct in thinking you have the arctic and the carbon cases? If so, these are the colours which i am interested in (sonic draws too much attention and ebony is too black).
I was wondering which one you prefer. I'm tossing the two up at the moment, hard choice.

Not much I can add to what's been written. Except to say I think this a really good product and I would recommend it to my friends. Its very versatile.

Also, double props to the company for taking care of the QC issue on the disc. I sent them an email when I got mine and they said they would send me a new disc when they got them. Well, it just showed up in the mail without my even having to send them another email.

Thanks for the review(s) and the pics. I'm looking for a case for mine, and I'm thinking the exo2 is the way to go.

Did they give an ETA for the Glo skins? Those are pretty nifty shades. Maybe I'll be patient and see if they come out for MWSF.

Oh, and the dryer sheet trick is awesome. Wouldn't have thought of that.

this skin does not fit into the docking unit does it? thats the impression i get... so i have to completely remove the skin everytime i dock the unit? that pretty much makes it useless for me.

ISNT

yes you do, but you can unplug the firewire cable from the dock and just plug the cable in instead...

I just got an iSkin exo2 Arctic (clear frosted white) and I posted pics on my website in my iSkin exo2 Arctic Photo Gallery (http://www.wayblur.com/gallery/iskinexo2) for anyone interested in seeing on in action.

It is completely awesome and just what I expected.

renderboy (and everyone else who owns a Sonic iSkin), is it really that translucent in real life? or is that a camera effect? because the translucence is really the only reason i'm getting a Sonic, if it's not like that IRL i'm getting an Arctic

TIA

renderboy

The colored iSkins are about 15% translucent. If you like the see-thru effect you'd probably like the Artic the best then. The Sonic colored one has a slightly interesting effect though. It's blue, but when viewing the edges it looks more purple. Kind of a soft irridescent effect. It's not really dramatic, but it's there. Others have noticed this too.

My pictures of my Sonic are here
