I'm looking for a cheaper solution than the one offered at the dealership but I want to get the exact same functionality. Is this possible to do on my own or will I need to get it done at the dealership?
I know that the car has an AUX for the iPod in the glove but can I just simply connect it there and get all the features like in-dash display and song selection?

It depends on the car model and such. Search on google a bit and you should find some pics.
If you have a casette player in your car you can just use an adapter to get the audio in, but you'll still have to control it through the ipod.
the other other options I can see are to get a new head unit of some sort that supports ipods. Those range from $150-$300+ and the ipod kits are around $50, plus whatever install.

I have an '06 E350.
If you use the AUX in, you have to use the iPod to control the music.
I like that better anyway, I think it's much faster.
The only thing is that I have to figure out how to run the wire out of the glovebox.
I can't close it with the wire coming out.
Also the $3.99 wire is quite a bit cheaper than $300 plus installation.

In my previous car I used the aux port, they didn't route the wire via the glove box, just under the plastic dashboard part. You're right, the aux port is WAAAY cheaper but you have to always poke at the ipod. I really prefer using the stereo controls to change songs, etc, and it's easier to see what's playing on the screen.
Both methods work well, I just sprung for the full integration because I had to get a new head unit anyways.
