I recently bought a brand new black 30 gb ipod video, but i will not be using it until saturday, because that is when i bring it back from my holidays, and thus i have no songs or anyting on it. However, i was still curious to see if my new ipod worked, and i turned it on- and i went into settings and about, and it said that i only had a 27.8 gb capacity. Is this right and normal, and why is this?

Its the OS on the iPod.
I think
Or Thats how much memory you have after formatting it

Yeah dude, thats completely normal. Mine's a 15gig 3rd Gen. it only has about 13 gig of space for music though because of the firmware. Yours is a video so I'd expect the firmware files to be a bit larger. No worries.

How many times have we gone through this? 30GB does not equal 300000000 whatever bytes. They just round most of the time. And some of the space goes to formatting for the software and such.
