Why do some of the headphones split to single cords (to the earpieces) with shorter cables to teh left ear? I mean, why aren't the cables the same length from the split. The way I wear them (ipod on right hip), the cord always tries to pull my left earphone out because it is shorter. It doesnt' make sense to me. Example is a pair of sony in-ear headphones, as well as 2 new pairs of Sennheiser phones.

So that you can put the right-hand ear cord behind your neck. With in-ear phones, that means reduced microphonics.

vendors running out of things to make their phone's "special?"

Bloody hell, it's not that complicated! With Y-cords, the cord dangles down and jiggles about; with J-cords, it rests on the back of your neck and doesn't move.

Ok. Your version of "rests on the back of your neck and doesn't move" must be the same as my "left earphone pulls out all the time and the overly long right earphone cord that catches on every tree limb and car mirror." I think they need to go back to the drawing board. Thank god this latest pair of sennheiser headphones comes with a clip that you can attach to your shirt when working out.

Well if they don't suit you, why not exchange them for a pair that do? No headphone's going to make everyone happy.

Okay then...
To reap the benefit of the J cord, the "nut" junction has got to be pretty close to the left plug, this, unfortunately, has the negative effect to "pull" as tenja complains.
Use the shirt clip in conjunction with the "loop around your earlopes" techique, if microphonics bothers u, and use any Y phones.

I believe it is the sounds generated by the cord rubbing on zips et. al which causes vibration in the cord, which you then hear.

The main reason that headphone manufacturers do this is because it is guarenteed to result in people asking other people why they think headphone manufacturers do it in forums such as this and then eventually everyone will reach the conclusion that it is a conspiracy by the manufacturers to raise everyones interest level in headphones and because people become more interested in headphones they also buy more headphones making headphone manufacturers richer and headphone users poorer :)
Another reason could be because they do it to annoy people who have got into the habit of hanging their chosen player off the opposite side of their body from the short part of the cable... if you put the headphones on back to front the problem is solved
