i need some good headphones simply because every other pair i've had can't handle audio ranges very accurately. i've thrown out 3 pairs of sonys already because they are utter crap for audio quality and the ipod's are just barely sufficient. I would love earplug or can-type but they completely block off outside noise which is a bad thing when i'm with friends or walking to school in the middle of downtown.

how are noise-cancelling phones in terms of audio quality? Also, which would give me better quality? streetstyle or buds?

my other issue is that i can't order online...so that means im limited to electronic stores near my university (there's about 8 of those). they sell mostly sony and panasonic with a few selling sennheisers. I know for sure that there's a radio shack nearby that sells most sennheiser products but i can't find any brands other than these :'(

Well, if you're out in the city and not blocking out noise, then no headphones are going to sound very good because they're competing with other noise.

noise cancelling phones are bigger and require batteries. Not a good solution in my opinion. I would go with an earphone [earplug] type phone. The sony ex-71's aren't the best in sound quality but are pretty good. They are also eary to insert and remove should you need to hear something/someone better. You can also still hear most outside sound with the music off and the plugs still in.

i'm interested in high quality because once i'm on campus, things get nice and quiet...it's annoying when you get grainy sounds for bass and the treble is non-existent. I know it's not the audio quality because it all shows on my speaker system

Now, not sure if this is any help but SkullCandy Skull Crushers (http://www.skullcandy.com/product.php?products_id=6) got a good review on a Gadget show here in the UK - the criteria seemed to be for use in a noisy urban environment and they beat the Sennheiser HD280 and Bose Quiet Comfort 2.
They certainly got good marks for their bass!!!

seems awesome...but bulky :(

how about Ministry of Sound? i know a place selling their streetstyles, earbuds and cans. The cans are out of the question for portability reasons

found these 2...
Ixos 1008 (http://www.georeviews.co.uk/IXOS-Ministry-Of-Sound-1008-Earphones_L12388/)
The frequency response is a typical 20 Hz to 20 kHz; the maximum power input is 60mw, which isn't really an issue as they're designed for portable players

Ixos 1007 (http://www.georeviews.co.uk/IXOS-Ministry-Of-Sound-1007-Streetphones_L12390/)
gold 3.5 mm jack, the only thing missing is a volume control on the cable. The frequency response goes from 20 Hz up to 20 KHz. With an impedance of 32 ohms, a sensitivity of 115 bB at 1 mw and a maximum power rating of 100 mw

they seem good, but i'm not sure about the Hz ranges since i never really figured that stuff out

Stay away from streetstyles...they sound like garbage.

May I ask why you want open phones for portable use? With open phones you can hear everything going on around you...in which case, you might as well forget about any sort of high fidelity, because you can't appreciate it with all the noise going on around you. Closed is really the only way to go when in transit...all open designs I've tried not only leak sound in, but leak a tremendous amount of sound out as well (Everyone around you will hear what you're listening to)

ok...that makes sense...

so...i guess i'll be stuck with yet another pair of ####able sonys :'( ...this time i'll go with the in-ear ones

btw, i went by the sony store, they had just opened some of their can-style headphones to put on display. I must say, that was the crappiest build quality i have ever seen for the $60 canadian they were charging for it. i plugged into my ipod and all i heard was bass - there was almost no treble or mid-range

What about Shure E2's--about $80.00 U.S., and MUCH better than the Sony EX's, well worth the extra money IMHO....

A few things to look for:

Sony D66 eggo's, highly recomended over at head-fi...a little bass shy

Sennheiser PX200 - decent closed portable headphone from Sennheiser

Sennheiser HD212 Pro - Decent sounding, budget closed can

if you could order you'd have a lot more options open to you...but those are really all I can think of off the top of my head.
