Soldier here again. Two other soldiers in unit purchased IPODS. Can I upload my music on their IPOD. Do they have to load and format IPOD on their computert first or can I just drop it in my cradle??

Does operating systems have to be the same or does it matter??
Bottom line they want music and have no time to start ripping CDs.

It's best if you're running the same OS. But a WiPod can be connected to a Mac OK, just not the other way around.

But I don't recommend it as sometimes connecting to a Mac will have undesired results. Won't hurt anything permenantly, just will require reuploading all those tunes.

Regarding sharing music. I recommend connecting the iPod and using it as a hard drive to move the music..so, don't do it through iTunes. Copy the tunes to the iPod through My Computer (just copy/paste them), then connect the iPod back to the owners computer, move the songs off of the iPod to the PC, then add those tunes to their itunes library and finally, sync.

Hope that makes sense.

Tracking...except why must I use theirs as a hard drive. Will my iTunes know its not my iPOD ??

Why can't I just sync it like I would mine??

Just asking.........trying to help fellow soldiers. Once they format their hard drive they will not have access to their computer, trying to help them out so they can have music far away from home. Don't want to mess up my library on my computer.

Thanks

Since iTunes doesn't allow you to copy music off of the iPod, this is why I suggest going to HDD route.

The process your follow is this:

Connect your iPod to Friends PC.
Copy Music to a temporary folder you make on your iPod in My Computer. Note: you will not be able to play this music, it's just as if you copied some documents or videos to the ipod.
Connect your iPod to your PC
Move the files from the iPod (through My Computer) to your PC
Import the tunes into your iTunes library
Sync iTunes w/the iPod.

This is the best way to do it IMO.
