I know this question has been asked a zillion and six times, but I'm an idiot and I need to be talked down to in this situation.

I have an iPod. The 40GB ordered from the Apple.com website a few days ago. What is it that I need to make it work?! The iPod itself works, of course.. but how do I hook it up to my computer to transfer songs, etc? There is a cable I need to buy? What is it called exactly?

I have a new(ish) Dell computer, Windows XP Home Edition, USB 2., no FireWire.

Again, I'm really, really sorry for asking this question.. I know you guys must get sick of seeing the same things over and over.. but I appreciate your help. More than you know.

The only thing that you'll need is the USB2.0/Firewire cable to get things going. Conversely, you can get yourself a firewire card and forgo the cable, they are usually around the same price. Aside from that cable or the firewire card, everything that you need is in the box.

I just got mine yesterday and so can hopefully answer this.

You need the Apple Dock to USB/Firewire cable. I paid $39 Cdn for it.

You hook this cable into the dock, and then the USB portion will go into your computer and the firewire end will go into the AC wall adapter that comes with the Ipod. You could also check from the Ipod's main menu and see what firmware is installed. You'll probably have to download the 2.1 (?) update from Apple ehich will convert it into a Windows Ipod.

As far as transferring songs into the Ipod, you've got at least a couple of choices.

1) ITunes. It's free and it works quite well.

2) Sveta portable audio. About $19 US

3) Anapod explorer. $25 Us.

There's other methods, but these are the ones I use. After installing ITunes, reboot. After converting the Ipod into a Windows Ipod, reboot. Then, when you fire up ITunes, you should see your Ipod in the left hand pane.

hope this helps.

Assuming that you're going to be transferring on a Windows computer with USB 2.0, yes.

Ah yes. My bad. Sorry, I was posting that while at my girlfriend's house and watching 28 days later (hooked on that movie).

That's the only addiotnal thing you'll need. At some point, I can see getting a good case. The one that it comes with is nice, and does prptect the Ipod, but does not allow for operation of controls. I found it absolutely amazing just how dirty and greasy my supposedly clean hands were! The nice shiny chrome back of the Ipod looks as if someone had rubbed a stick of warm butter over it (literally 2 minutes after opening up the package).
