even if say i was to do it what would be the worst thing that could happen to it.
I think an artist has to do what they have to do. If you feel you must paint it to give it a bit of you then go ahead. First you should find the right paint and experiment on a piece of plastic and once you feel you are ready go for it

www.colorwarepc.com paints iPods. The Screen Savers just had some of their painted Mac systems on the show tonight and they looked great. I think it was $50 for iPods (3g only).

I'm thinking of buying a spare front face for a 3rd gen and experimenting with painting it. It seems that the paint is actually under a thick clear coat so anyone have suggestion for stripping/ getting the nice clear coat back? Also, how would you go about painting the touch whell without ruining it?

i don't think you can paint the ipod. the plastic is just colored that way. cause if you look at all of the ones that colorware or who ever that paints the ipods, they don't pain the buttons.

Dont go that route mate. I would suggest you buy a cheap Ipod case and experiment a little bit. I have had great success with Tamiya Model paints (get paint here (http://www.tamiya.com/english/e-home.htm) ). This is what I used to paint my gundam models and are made to bond with plastics. Use nice broad spray strokes with the can far away from your objective(20 inches). Nice even coats giving time to let it dry. you must give it time to dry and keep the can at least 20 inches away to let the paint mist onto your case because can pressure is heavy. You can use a hair dryer to increase your paint drying speed. Use several thin coats.I am going to make a nice solid tutorial of this as soon as i the ideal plastic case suitable for paint. I'm actually looking for a spare front on ebay so I can experiment. I hope to get the front all black with a graphic in the touch wheel area. Please let us know how it all turns out for you.
