I'd rule out canalphones due to the reduced ambient noise they cause. You'd be hit by a bus or something if your ears are plugged up.
Also, over-the-ear larger pairs may cause a problem in the portability category. Sometimes they are too big and unwieldly.
Maybe some smaller over-ear clip-on things?

I don't run on the street, I run at the park. I also don't lift weights on the street, so getting hit by a bus while working out is not an issue.
Get some in canal monitors, wrap them around your ears, run the cable inside the back of your shirt and the cord will not be in the way. I snowboard, workout regularly, and have recently taken up wall climbing. Ipod in a case, clipped to a piece of clothing or get the armband and you are good to go.
