View Full Version : Buying advice - CX300 or Bass Fr

Hi all,

Am looking for a bit of advice about which of these I should get, based on a couple of factors.

Firstly; the sound isolation. I've read quite a bit about in-ear type earphones being, well, dangerous when walking around near traffic etc due to the blocked out sound. I'd like to know just how much of a problem is this, and whether one set will be better (as in, let more sound through) than the other, or if there's not much of a difference.

Secondly; comfort. Simple enough - is one more comfy to wear than other other?

Thanks,

Rob

Bass Freq.... believe me after just 1 minute suffering that ghastly stiff wire the CX300 is wired up with you'll want rid of it, whereas the Bass Freq's wireing is noted only by how absent it seems to be - no tugging on ears - no microphony - sweet :) and another advantage is they sound great considering how little they cost, especially if like me you listen to lots of live music... I'm not sure how v-mode would feel, but imho bass freq's aren't just great for hip hop, because they can also do a damned good job reproducing the real sound of a full orchestra especially the weight and impact of the lower strings that other headphones around the same price or even more costly only hint at.

To be honest I haven't had any sort of problem walking in traffic wearing any kind of headphones or earphones, but then I am quite convinced that this is one of those urban legends thats got no real basis in fact... or maybe its me - I learned my green cross code properly when I was a youngster, so traffic is no problem for me... note to self - I must count how many idiots wearing headphones I see being run over on the way to work each morning.

So far as amount of background sound let in by either the CX300 or Bass Freq's goes they sound pretty much similar to me - neither of them have the maximum amount of exclusion of background sound by comparison with phones such as triple flanged ET's or Shures, but they would cost you significantly more. You can even swop the flanges off CX300s with those that v-mode supply or vis versa.

id say CX300

good sound quality and isolation, and its so comfortable you will forgot you are even wearing them.

however they do take a few days to get used to.

There's very little in it. Both represent a great upgrade from stocks or Sony EX51/71s.

V-Modas probably just have it for comfort (They are so light) and definitely for after sales service, while the Sennheisers have a small edge for sound, for me.

It should be noted that preference is also strongly swayed by asymmetrical or symmetrical cables, and for some users the availability of colors. I believe CX300 is available in 2 colors with black cables, and Bass Freq has 8 colors. The CX300 has the right cable is significantly longer than the left, Bass Freq is equal length left and right. Cable configuration and colors are of course personal preferences, I personally like symmetrical cables and the orange-camoflouge color.

i swear that design is seriously flawed. im not critsing the J cord principle, i actually prefer the J chord over the Y chord anyday, the thing with the Cx300 is that the right cable is about twice the length of the left one. thus when wearing there is alot of unnecesary cable floating around and is very anoying.

the perfect ratio would be 1 : 1.5 or 1 : 2 thats wayyyy too long

kpax - if you think its bad on the Sennheiser, I believe Sony's ratio is even worse. Some of the models have almost no cable on the left ear like the MDR-888lp.

Thanks for all the responses guys; great information.

Decided to go with the Bass Freq's due to the two being, apparently, fairly similar - with the Y-cable and colour options swaying it in favour of V-Moda.

Thanks again,

Rob
