Hi,

I'm looking to step up from the stock earbuds. I would like as best quality
sound as possible. Yes I like bass, but I don't want the lame bass booster
types that muddy everything else. I would spring for the Shures, but
I really dont want earplug style phones. My only other constraint is I
won't buy Sony products (past issues), and besides I said good quality :)

Sennheiser MX-400's or 500's. Cheap yet very good!

What's your price range, and what are you going to use them for? It really depends on if you're just going to use them at home, or out and about, and what you're willing to spend.

Shure E2's are a really good pair. I've tried the Sony 51/71s and they didn't do it for me. Very shrill and i couldn't get a really good seal with any of the plugs anyway. I use the large faom earpieces for the Shure E2s, so my ears might be too big for the Sonys.

I also have the Koss PortaPro Jr. I once thought they were the BEST earphones you could buy, and while they are pretty #### good in there price range, they aren't accurate. The bass is extremely bloated and the trebles are sharp. It isn't a smooth sound at all. The Shure's aren't the smoothest sounding cans either, but at least they are accurate and balanced. The E2s deliver great bass too. They are a very balanced sounding headphones.

i'm not sure if this is a good audio range..i'm looking for earbuds (not the in-ear stuff)

The frequency response is a typical 20 Hz to 20 kHz; the maximum power input is 60mw

I am willing to spend up to 100 bucks. Again, I don't want the earplug
types, they are not comfortable to me at all. This rules out the Shures.

Senn PX 100 or 200s, or Koss KSC 55 would be my recs for portable in that price range (actually well below your price range); if they don't have to be portable, I'd go with the Grado SR 60's for about $70.00. Actually, you could get the Koss (or PX 100's) AND the Grado's for under $100.00--then you'd have a good headphone for portable use, and a great set of cans for at home...
