nearly every town or region has it's "thing" it's famous for:
- where i grew up (campbell, ca) it was known for prunes and dried apricots (oh, yay!)
- lived up in humboldt county for awhile, which is known for something more enjoyable than prunes ;)
- now i live in morgan hill, which is known for its mushrooms (not the psychadelic type!). nothing like fresh shrooms, but oh man if the wind is blowing the wrong way ...
so what's your town's story?

My current town, Holly Springs, NC, is the 'fastest growing town in North Carolina'. That of course could be a bad thing or a good thing.
My hometown, Peachtree City, GA, is the golf cart capital of the south. At the time I went to college, my college had a larger population than my hometown.

In addition, Monroeville is very near the world's first all concrete bridge, the George Westinghouse Memorial Bridge. The bridge was also the largest of its type for a very long time.

My 'town' is known for many things; shame to say, but I haven't seen a lot of the sites, except for the retail stores, Macy's, H&M, etc...:D. Seriously, though, my mom raised me in museums, so I've visited most of them many times, the Metropolitan, MOMA, Natural History and even the lesser known, like the Transit.

Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh in the west, Philadelphia in the east, Alabama in between.
If you went through the middle of the state, I don't blame ya.
Portland, Oregon is known as "the rose city". Roses grow like freakin' weeds here. Then again, so does nearly everything else.
Its has been called the "beer capital of the USA", and was once called by a beer expert (with the unfortunate name of Michael Jackson) as a candidate for beer capital of the world, due to having more breweries than Cologne, Germany.
Portland has been noted as "the most sustainable city in the USA" by SustainLane.com and the "best bicycling city in the USA" by Bicycling Magazine. Portland was awarded Best Walking City by the health magazine, Prevention, and Outside Magazine calls it a New American Dream Town. Men's Journal picked Portland as its Best Place to Live, partly because of its fantastic music scene.
The nearby Willamette Valley has a booming wine industry, with pinot noir being the signature varietal. There is a growing winery tour industry.
It also boats an awful basketball team that is most noteworty for its criminal record.
Oregon is the largest producer of Christmas trees in the country.
But its a horrible, horrible place, and you do not want to move here! :D

Anywho, my town is the birthplace of renowned photographer "Snowflake" Bentley. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilson_Bentley) If you do not know who he is, read the wikipedia entry. Interesting stuff.
We also, though I didn't know this before just reading the Wikipedia entry for my town, have the longest continuously running general store in Vermont. It changes owners semi-often though, and is currently in it's third ownership in 15 years.

Byron NY actually has a town named after it- Byron Minnesota... and, unsurprisingly, they've outgrown us...
We are home to (half, anyway) of the three-time New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C volleyball champions.
And then there's the bloody civil war that led to Byron's independence from Bergen... the then-mayor got a papercut from the document.

Travis Tritt lives in mine.
Bristol, United Kingdom:
Strong links with the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The S.S. Great Britain resides in one of the docks here. Clifton suspension bridge was another of his projects, and a famous reminder of his influence. He was also the architect for the GWR railway, which provided citizens with an invaluable travel link to London.
Was one of the principle ports involved with the slave trade of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Many of the components for the supersonic jet Concorde were developed and manufactured here. It is the final resting place for the aircraft, and you may pay to visit it.
Was the base for the explorer John Cabot, whom in the latter part of the 15th century undertook a voyage to explore North America.
Is the epicentre for the trip-hop music scene, which emminated in the 1990s. Bands such as Massive Attack and Portishead are from Bristol and composed their songs in the area.
The world famous guerilla artist Banksy is from Bristol. Many of his works can be spotted when walking the streets of this city.
Bristol International Balloon Festival
Edmund Burke was a Member of Parliament for one of Bristol's constituencies. During the 18th century he proposed the system of representative democracy. It is a system which we still use today, as do the majority of democracies across the globe.
The very first Methodist Church was founded in the city by John Wesley.

I come from Glasgow, Scotland, and where to begin! Glasgow's known for so much!
Engineering, especially ship building on the River Clyde. Glasgow used to be the place ships were made, but unfortunately the industry's dying out for many reasons which we won't go into here :-)
Education, two of the best universities in the UK are here, University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde. Glasgow has the largest student population in Scotland and the second largest in the UK.
Football/Soccer, two of Europe's best teams come form Glasgow, Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers
Glasgow is the home of Franz Ferdinand, the Fratellis and Amy Macdonald.
Very distinctive accent/dialect, often known as Glasgow Patter, Glesga Patter or just Glaswegian
Glasgow is also currently the front runner for hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games
Glasgow has the second largest and most economically important retail sector after London.
So, basically a lot of the stuff Glasgow does or has is the second best in the UK, usually after London. Although sometimes Edinburgh beats us too but that's a rare occurrence ;-)
