I've seen the pictures in "iPods around the world" and their iPods seem fine without the cases! Does anyone have a picture of how bad one can really get? How noticiable are the scratches?

i don't have pictures sorry, but i recommend you do use a case,

the iPod can get very noticable stains and scratches to the Stainless Steel Back, and they are quite noticable, after i think 3-4 days i used the pouch to carry the iPod in, and some reason the Stainless steel back of my iPod did have some stains or minor scratches,
but after using the slip case, everything seems alright

First, scratches wont usually show up well in photos.

So far my iPod would've been much better off without a case than with the crappy Jam Jacket. Currently all my scratches on my iPod are the JamJacket's fault.

Han83, how can the STAINLESS steel back get stains?

lolz sorry Yus, yeah the back can't get stains, but some of the scratches i got on the back, look like patches, and tend to look like stains

I dont care if my ipod get scratched.. I keep it in same pocket as money, keys and stuff without any case at all.

I bought it to play mp3's.. Its inside my pocket, who carez what it looks like.. A ipod is a TOOL.. You use a TOOL.

Definitely use a case, if you are at all interested in keeping your expensive toy looking pretty, please use a case. I put mine in my pocket just for a minute while moving round my house without putting it in the mesh bag that came with it, heard a jingle, realised I'd got my keys in the pocket, took it out, and there is a very light half-inch scratch on the back of my three-day-old iPod. Can only see it at a specific angle, but I know it's there!

EsspeN I agree in principal, but the iPod is a very very EXPENSIVE tool..I for one don't want it looking like a piece of crap that cost half the price, alright?

You definately want a case, because you don't really want a scratched iPod. Even though you say that scratches won't bother you, they will. The first scratch on the iPod is usually one that only shows up at certain angles, which annoys me to no end, because it is not something that you can get used to because it only shows up once in a while. Once you get a scratch like that, which eats at your subconcious telling you "how could you destroy your $400 "TOY"", then you realize that it is not a toy anymore, and you go and get a good case to protect your investment.

Well, I'll go another direction and point out that far more dangerous than scratches are dents and falls. I know most cases don't protect that much against that, but having bounced my old Palm PDA off hard floors a number of times I got a leather case which provided just enough cushioning that when dropped I didn't develop new dents.

I dropped my old 1st gen iPod once (ironically, just after removing it from the case to clean and photograph it for sale) and it hit the edge of the counter and made a noticeable dent in the edge of the front of the unit.

Cases can also be useful if you do something like drop it off your belt into a snowy parking lot, etc. One more layer between your iPod and the elements.

Then again, if you just use it in your carpeted house and keep it zipped in a pocket of a bag when not in use this may not matter to you.

PS - true story. May I also put in a plug for the Exo Maclear case from lajo.biz? While I was writing this I upended a bottle of water onto my desk, and my iPod was out from showing it to a coworker. If it hadn't been zipped into its Maclear it would be a bad situation right now.... As it was, I mopped up the leather purse first because I knew my iPod was safe and dry. And no - I'm not always a clutz. Just a person who takes their electronics with them everywhere.

i really dont agree, i was expecting a hell of a time with my ipod after hearing all the stories but dont see the fuss.
The cover is a white shiny plastic, think like a white plastic barrel of a pen but brighter and more reflective. Given that white reflects light it may show scratches more but i dont have any scratches that i notice thou i do have a few on the back.

I really wouldnt worry, unless you bought it for style, you'll never notice or care that much. Plus, it will be an ongoing process, just let it age naturally.

Check it out... I'de imagine that an iPod with a case would look like 4 and 5. and the other numbers would be an iPod without a case. :D

"how bad can an ipod get without a case"
well, how bad do you WANT it to get! without a case it has no protection, the only protection it has is that pretty white plastic, and that scratches really easily
the stainless steal also adds protection, but it scratches even easier.
youre looking at one ugly ipod if you dont protect it some way. as for the fellow who doesnt care what his ipod looks like, all i have to say is, ill be waiting when you come crying to us when your keys have punctured a hole in the screen and you dont know what to do about it

You're comparing the surface of the iPod to the barrel of an eight-cent disposable ball point pen? It's nothing like it at all. The iPod has a clear layer of plastic, with a white layer underneath.

you can put a PDA screen protector over the screen area of the iPod. that should prevent your screen from getting all scratched up.

The flip side of the coin is... drop your iPod once and there's a good chance you've doomed it for an expensive repair and/or the trash bin. Mine got knocked off my belt clip by an idiot who ran into me and because I had the case on it, I was able to avoid any external case damage. However, the hard drive got toasted so when I sent it into Apple Care, they replaced it without question. If the case had shown visible damage, I might not have gotten so lucky as AC doesn't cover user carelessness AFAIK.
